I have often wondered about how this country would have ended up if the pioneers moving west had been able to sue the government for not protecting them from all the stupid things they (the pioneers) did. For example trying to cross the Rocky Mountains during the winter or stealing land from the native Americans. IMO anyone who attempts to live at or below sea level deserves what they get when mother nature gets angry.

What tornado have you seen destroy everything like that hurricane did? It will happen again sooner or later and destroy everything they rebuild.

Those tornadoes that hit Ok City a few years back did a pretty good tap dance on that city...

Tornadoes are a lot more random than living below sea level on the coast and staying home during a hurricane. Plus when I got tornado damage I fixed it myself or with insurance money I paid for. I didn't sit on my roof waiting for the govt to buy my stupid arse out of my own ignorance. No govt money should pay for people who choose to live in a flood plain. You can't fix sorry and some folks are just plain sorry.

Sonicblue03

Yes I saw a lot of the damage, but it seemed like nothing compared to the pictures I saw of Katrina. I was able to see some of the damage first hand in OKC.

Here on Oklahoma it is almost impossible to get a loan to build a home in a flood zone much less home owner's insurance. That whole state is pretty much below sea level.
IMO massive flooding alone causes way more damage than a tornado just because of the area it can cover, and then you have to factor in the tornado force winds with the hurricane.

I'm not saying that the tornado is worse, I'm just offering a different point of view. Should you "get what you deserve" if your trailer gets picked up a with your family inside it and smashed because you live in a trailer in tornado alley? (No I'm not saying anyone here owns a trailer) The point is not if the government should help you or not. The point is that these people "got what they asked for".

You miss the point Adam. There is reasonable risk with a tornado. If you choose to live BELOW sea level then you accept the eventuality of a flood. We know exactly where flood plains are and what is below sea level. We have no way of predicting the exact path of a tornado.

I do believe that there is a difference between living below sea level behind levees and living in a flood plain.. I lived in Houston within the 100 yr flood plain and normally you dont have an issue unless its one of those, once in a 100 yr floods.. but you can get flood insurance for that and recognize that when you buy the home.. however, their beef is that the govt built and maintained those levees and it was the govt that didnt maintain them to an appropiate level to keep the Katrina disaster from happening.. they may have a point. However, are the damages worth what they are asking, heck no. Not sure where it will end, but what do you think that there wont be a health settlement in there somewhere?
No one wants to lose a home or loved ones due to a natural disaster, but it happens and no govt or persons can prevent that.. anyone that decides to live in a low lying area, below a dam, or in any such type of area has the potential for losing everything given the right circumstances, history is ripe with these things happening.. at least you can see when a hurricane is coming and have the opportunity to get out. Tornados are a whole 'nother kettle of fish, because the advance warning and the knowledge of where they are going to avoid them, just isnt there.
In regard to Katrina, we have wasted an incredible amount of taxpayers dollars to get them back on their feet. There is a pending bill in Congress to ask for another couple of BILLION dollars, meaning all those folks would get more than a few hundred thousand dollars each back.. give me a break..
I do feel for some of them, however, I agreed with the majority speaker of the House that said after the disaster, why dont we just leave the part that is under water, there? to rebuild that just defies common sense. Although it was stated earlier that most of New Orleans is under sea level, well, I dont believe that it is, but with the departure of so many folks New Orleans and apparently not coming back, I say leave the part under water where it is and move on.

Whew...
Dana

i get it. i wouldnt live in a flood zone but i am just challenging the way of thinking here. how about the people that live up north that die in blizzards etc to an outsider they get what they deserve for living there. i was just trying to give you a different perspective not to challenge the fact that living in a flood zone is ignorant. i think we can all agree on that.

I know people wont agree BUT

I think that building or rebuilding a city that is under sea level AND is that prone to problems - is Insane
- IM not thrilled about the bankruptcy of the social security system being accelerated by the idiocy of the billions of dollars wasted there

No NEW development would be allowed to be created in that way - no bank would finance it and no insurance company would cover it. Its ONLY because of the idiocy of the US Federal Govt that this is allowed.

If you rely on the government, chances are you will get screwed. If someone lives below sea level they should have enough common sense to get flood insurance. If they can't get flood insurance, don't live below sea level. It is not the responsibility of the government and our tax dollars to help out people that apparently would not help themselves. If they had flood insurance then this wouldn't be such an issue. If someones house was hit by a tornado and they didn't have any insurance should they expect the government to give them money? If someone lives up north and doesn't have the proper tools to survive through a blizzard, should the government give them money? Yes, people get what they deserve when they make stupid choices.

i actually agree with what you guys are saying. i also think that when you live in a high risk area then you accept that risk and should be able to handle it yourself. the whole katrina thing is a complex topic which i dont really know a whole lot about except what i read or saw on tv. my reason for posting was just to play devils advocate in order to provoke discussion.

HOW TO PARALYZE A NATION <><>

There was a US History professor in a large college that had some Exchange students in the class. One day while the class was in session the Prof noticed one young man (exchange student) who kept rubbing his back and stretching as if his back hurt. The professor asked the young man what was the matter. The student told him he had a bullet lodged in his back. He had been shot while fighting communists in his native country who were trying to overthrow his country's government and install a new communist government. In the midst of his story he looked at the professor and asked a strange question. He asked, ' Do you know how to catch wild pigs? 'The professor thought it was a joke and asked for the punch line. The young man said this was no joke.' You catch wild pigs by finding a suitable place in the woods and Putting corn on the ground. The pigs find it and begin to come everyday to eat the free corn. When they are used to coming every day, you put a fence down one side of the place where they are used to coming. When they Get used to the fence, they begin to eat the corn again and
> you put up Another side of the fence. They get used to that and start to eat again. You continue until you have all four sides of the fence up with a gate in The last side. The pigs, who are used to the free corn, start to come through the gate to eat, you slam the gate on them and catch the whole herd. Suddenly the wild pigs have lost their freedom. They run around and around inside the fence, but they are caught. Soon they go back to eating the free corn. They are so used to it that they have forgotten how to forage in the woods for themselves, so they accept their captivity. The young man then told the professor that is exactly what he sees happening to America. The government keeps pushing us toward Communism/socialism and keeps spreading the free corn out in the form of programs such as supplemental income tax credit for unearned income, tobacco subsidies, dairy subsidies, payments not to plant crops (CRP), welfare, medicine, drugs, etc. While we continually lose our freedoms- just a little at a time. One should always remember 'There is no such thing as a free Lunch!' Also, if you see that all of this wonderful government 'help' is a problem confronting the future of democracy in America, you might want to send this on to your friends. If you think the free ride is essential to your way of life then you will probably delete this email, but God help you when the gate slams shut!

Why is it the Federal Govt. i.e. me a tax payer has to pay the "3 quadrillion" law suit when in fact it was the state govt. of LA who was responsible for maintaining the leviees and it was the Gov. of LA who waited 3 or 4 days before saying it was a natural diaster area and then let the US Govt come in after it was too late

It's no wonder our country is broke and turning into a third world country, now Canada's dollar is worth more than the US dollar

Let's not forget that, as voters we elect the representatives who spread the corn and build the fences. We are all part of the problem in one way or another.

there is a quote somewhere that I saw but can t find now that talked about ( paraphrased ) Democracy lasting ONLY until the people realize that they can vote themselves cash from the public coffers - Once they understand that the process is doomed -

In a democracy the poor will have more power than the rich, because there are more of them, and the will of the majority is supreme.
