Cold Air

Is anyone running the K&N brand cold air intake on thier L? I am thinking about getting one. How does it compare as far as bang for buck compared to other brand intakes.

If no one has this intake, what kind of intake has everyone had the most success with.

i have a air raid intake and it seems to suck the air in just as good as any other cai. basically do this: pick one that looks cool to you. i like the way mine looks(was on the truck when i bought it) but if i were to do it again i would go with the aem brute force intake simply b/c its chrome and more of a full cai unlike my "cai" which is just a air box... the K&N would be my 2nd choice unless i planned on going bigger MAF then it would become my #1 choice. good luck with what ever you get man.

The K&N replacement filters are a waste of money - I dont know if anyone used the K&N FIPK kit

yea the replacement for the stock air box is a waste considering the stock filters flows enough for a stock truck. its not the filter that is the restriction its the crappy air box.

before someone jumps in there and says im wrong about the stock air filter... yea im right its good for the stock vehicle or else ford wouldnt have used it. not to start crap talk. :tu:

you could always use that dryer vent hose from home depot and make your own intake like i saw on a car at a car show today. :hammer:

The stock filter setup will bring in cooler air than the open filter. The open filter is going to be bringing in hot air from the heat soaked engine. Most that go to the open filter do it to increase the volume of the blower whine.

true, but after you hit 30 mph or so, the engine compartment is at abient air temp.. so thats not a huge issue either..

Hmmm.. Data logging suggest otherwise (http://www.timskelton.com/lightning/race_prep/powertrain/cold_air.htm). Some of the systems that feed air into the filter from outside such as the PSP Fast Air will bring the iat temperature near ambiant (this is actually what I use), but it still takes time. Especially if your drag racing, time is the point.

Of course Kenne Bell will void the warranty on your supercharger if used with a "hot air intake" (http://www.kennebell.net/techinfo/general-info/HotAirWARNING.pdf).

I'm happy with the AirRaid setup I have on the L. It definitely lets the S/C breathe vs the stock air-box.

I see what you mean but I believe that our own Terry Cole has different data... not sure who is being scientific here or not.. but its more data to take into consideration when making a purchase.

Had the K&N setup for almost (4) years now with no problems and it really streems!!!

The PCV hoses and fittings on the KnN kits are horrible. I have probably installed at least 100 basic 12 inch filter kits. I have data logged them and rolling temps were within 2-3 degrees of ambient. None of the boxes supply enough air to feed a built truck. The airaid boxes are too narrow and block the sides of the filter. If you seal a box to the hood etc once again you are sucking air through the little stock hole in the fender. Ram air scoops suck hot sand laced air off the pavement. Summer roads in t Texas are over 120 degrees that is some of the worst dirtiest air you can feed your engine. A filter is one pleace to save your money and keep it simple.

BTW Jim Bell is a Nazi about some things. As good as his stuff is he is close minded to a few things. Yes hot air is bad in general but I don;t like his boost a pump he swears by. It runs up to 18 volts to the fuel pumps to get more fuel out of them...
