i have a 2000 model, so im stuck with the stock 3:55 gears.... i have found a few deals on 3:73 and 4:10 gears... they arent that expensive, but im wondering what installation will cost.... i figure a couple hundred.... so here are my questions...

is upgrading from 3:55 to 3:73 worth the cost?

is 4:10 too much for a daily driver? at what speed would it top out? i dont beat the thing to death and go 140 anyway... so I dont care about that... but curious if its gonna top out at like 120 or like 80???? i dont know...

also, will changing the gears dramitcly change my gas milage???

Gears won't do much for ya, for as much as they cost, I have gears trust me they don't do much but throw your speedo off!

Typically $500 for gears and install by someone that knows what there doing.

It does effect gas milage-

Going to L fest we had 2 trucks with 3:55's and one with 3:73's. He had to gas up when the 3.73 truck was on E and we still had a 1/4 of tank left with the 3:55's.


I get 13 to 15 MPG in the G2 with 3:55's and 10 to 11MPG with G1 with 4:10's-

True that on the gas milage! i get around 14 average 16 if on the highway.:tu:

just curious... iv never checked to see how many gallons our trucks hold.... i usually get right at about 250 miles per tank.... whats that equal out to?

I get about the same miles per tank.

Set your trip odometer to zero when you fill up next time. After that tank, read your trip odometer and use this formula: trip odometer miles divided by quantity of fuel put in the tank = miles per gallon.

I'm doing good to get 14-15 mpg and 300 miles out of 3/4 tank of 93 on the highway regardless of wind-direction.

This is with a light-foot.

I dont bother thinking about gas milage because its better i dont know :bs . When it starts to get empty i just fill her up.

Same here. I figure if I drive faster I'll get more MPG :D

My truck is a total daily driver. I drive from arlington to burleson everday to work and back home. At the least one night out to dallas/carrollton area and the weekends im out in the same area all weekend and almost 99.9% of the time i drive back to my house each night/morning .

First tank.. 10.5 mpg.

Second tank..12.7 mpg.

On the third tank now. Had the foot in it just a little more than usual. It doesn't look pretty for the mpg.

If changing from 3:55 to 3:73 will I need to get a speed cal like you would need in a mustang?

I gained ~0.10 improvement in the 1/4 and lost 1 mpg when switching from 3:55s to 4:10s. At 80 mph you will turn ~400 more rpm. At 111 mph with 28" slicks you will turn in neighborhood of 5400 rpm. If you are running deep into the 11's you would want a 30" tire or less gear.

Swap to 3.73s drops gear ratio only 5%, too little effect for my money. The 4:10 are a 15% change. Top end is little effected in OD, but you will turn more 15% more rpm for a given speed.

I claim to be the fastest guy on 3.55s in Talon, 11.8 seconds, so gears are not that important and I get around 17 mpg on the highway.:)

Your gonna have to lear how to launch first. :cool: With the added power it will be harder for you to hook up on those f1s. But since you just started racing you have time to learn. :tu:

F1's are awful for traction. Switch to nitto DR's and I'll never race on F1's again.It just isn't the same.

Until you bolt on some sort of soft compound tire only then will you be able to realize the max potential of your truck. Case in point, my best time BEFORE the DR's was an 8.35 in the 1/8 with a 2 something 60', which works out to about a 13.20 1/4 mile. NOT GOOD. With the DR's my best is an 8.20 1/8 mile and a 12.90 1/4 mile. BETTER. And thats with ONLY a 1.92 60'. The first 60' is very important for these trucks from what I've learned so far. :cool:

Heck im still learing how to launch this truck. I came from racing front wheel drive cars. Rear wheel drive is totaly different to launch. Alot easier also.
