iv never had a boat in my life, so to be honest I dont really know much about them. I know they can get REAL expensive though. I was kinda hoping maybe someone knew a little about them and had something to reccomend..

Here is what I would like

Used and price around $10,000
Enough power to ski, wake, etc (maybe 351 engine?)
dependable brand

a buddy told me to looking into an older Mastercraft Competition.... they have about 250hp and a 351 and are usually well under $10k... anything else to look out for??

also, if and when I get one... where is a good lake around here? I know Joe Pool is the closest to me, but I hear that lake sucks for boating

There's only one thing better than owning a boat and that is having a friend that owns a boat.

For 10k you can get a decent boat that is in great shape.. As for the master craft from the early 90's or older(10k range), they have NO WAKE at all. Not something you would want to wakeboard behind; slalom is superb tho. VERY ROUGH ride too.

This is something to converse over. Its more about what you want out of it rather than what is out there and available in your pricerange....

Also, the big v6(4.3L) is plenty with 200hp to ski/tube/wakeboard/kneeboard.. But you won't be able to barefoot..

Like Band said, it depends on what you want to do with it. Me, I wanted a boat that I can cruise comfortable in, can carry some coolers of beer, and is big enough that I can handle a moderately rough lake with no big problems. I don't plan on fishing on it.

Do a search on boattrader.com in your price range in this area - see if anything strikes your interest...

Thats my 22 foot Regal - Open bow - 5 liter Motor Inboard Outboard.

Its significantly more than your budget - BUT it was NEW. If you look for a used boat the savings can be significant.
The longer the boat the more the $$ - the $$ goes up QUICK as you go over 21 or 22 feet

The pictures in the category linked above were mostly taken from my boat. It is certed to hold 10 people - but they would have to be freindly... Its nice for party cove action on lake lewisville...

make SURE you get a bimini TOP with your boat - you wil wish you did ...
Shade and beer are BOTH critical in the summer

Barefooting requires a specific boat like the mastercrafts, and is really more of an aggresive watersport. I tell ya what man, if you wanna cruise up here to north dallas, we'll go looking at boats up here(lots of boatshops near speedworks). I'll give ya the general scoop of knowledge you need to make your own decision. I'm free this afternoon at 4pm. Or maybe sometime next week, my weekend is booked.

One of the guys at my work got a new ski boat last year for 14K, it was a 17 ft Searay. It's an ok package, 4 cylinder that will go up to around 45mph. But, buying a new boat is worse than buying a new car. Boats depreciate very quickly and it makes no sense to buy new unless you are one of those people that have to have new things.

I'm thinking of selling my pontoon boat to buy a ski boat myself, but with all the chaos in my job lately I don't think it will happen this year.

One of the advantages of buying new is financing for 15 years. And writing off the expenses.... And getting all the Little BS fixed under warranty. If you think ford is expensive for parts and service wait till you attche the word boat or plane to the repair

I think under 10k you can only finance for 5-6 years, over 10k you can go for 10 years.

marine environment is tough on STUFF

I would stay away from a 16 year old boat

I like that wellcraft, it sounds like a decent deal. But will only find out by driving it and seeing it in person. 10 years is about as far back as I would go.

I have seen pictures that just don't show the bad in some boats.

The time to buy a boat in in the off season. Now boats ad motorcycles are going fast and at asking price. Doug is right on boat repair even though it has a Ford or Chevy engine. They have unique parts and cost s lot more to fix. I also think the interest rate is higher on recreation type vehicles. Make sure you put it in the water for a test drive before you buy it! Does Texas have a mandatory boating education class now?

as was stated earlier - A Ski boat is COOL looking BUT ONLY does ONE thing well... Ski.. THATS IT... they ride like CRAP and they are more $$ than a general purpose boat like Garrets or mine. The ski boats often have LESS room in the interior for the same length. And if it is direct drive it is TOUGH to manuver around he docks since the prop is FIXED and the rudder ONLY works when you are moving and ONLY when moving FORWARD....

Im putting mine in the water today or tomorrow - It is going in to Lake lewisville. You are welcome to come by and take a look...

thanks doug... is lake lewisville a nice lake?? i havent been to many lakes... i have buddies with lakehouses... so pretty much only lake I ever been to is PK and Granbury... and of course, Joe Pool

there is a boat dealer right here next to my work... they sell SeaRay... he said a brand new 190hp V6 is $19k.... and a 4cyl is $15k.... but 4cyl is probably not enough power right??

they had a used 1997 SeaRay V6, 190hp for $11,500.... is that a good price... it looked awesome....
