Anyone know of a link to a how to for installing a V1 above the rear-view mirror? Can you tap into the power for the overheac console?

Thanks...

If you come by the shop I will help you with it. remove a few phillips screws and jerk down the console. Unplug it and set it aside. Pull some of the tape back and find 1 and 2 stamped on back of the connector. The black wire is ground and the white or striped one is ign hot. I use red scotch locks to tap into it with the hardwire power block. Then run 8" or so or cable above the headlinerout the front. Zip tie the rest and tuck it up in the cavity out of the way. Then plug in the console and snap it back in place and install screws. I use the suction cup mount above the mirror behind the tint strip. With tinted windows thieves don't see it as much.

Doesn't sound *too* hard.

i think I will give it a whirl this weekend - if I can't get it going I may take you up on the offer. i am pretty far away or I would just say screw it and head to your shop...http://www.talonclub.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

Is there any problem with reading through the window tint on the Lightning? I know some vehicles have metal content in the factory tint and radar detectors have a hard time reading through them.

No problem on reading through the tint.

Terry did a great job on my G1 and G2 for the hardwire install of the V1:tu:

Garrett

I used the hardwire connector and ran it under the liner - down the a pillar and to the one of the ignition wires.. It took 15 min...

I used a grey phone cable rather than black and it blends well. Also take the visor clip and reverseit so it faces towards you and slid it up into the liner right next to the console and the visor. Works great - Easy to take down - no issues with the tint...

I did what Terry did with my little brother, it looks nice, works great, and took no longer than 10 min. Good luck

Doug,
do you have any pics of how you mounted the v1 with the visor clip?

That's what I referenced when I installed mine. I just don't remember if the colors were the same. Just get a multimeter and you should be able to find the ground and power wires. I tapped into the keyed power so that mine would automatically turn on and off.

My install is pretty much the same as Doug's but I also have the remote display, which is really nice, especially at night. IMHO

Well, got the V1 mounted up, but some strangeness.

When we got it wired up, turning the ket to Accessory would make the radar detector come on repeatedly at power up - like someone jiggling a loose wire. Finally it would calm down after 4-5 seconds. i noticed that if I just crank the truck, it works fine. What I didn't check though before bolting it all back up is if the overhead console still works. Its freaking out - it says:

VAR

CAL

(random gibberish)

60 C (or 140 F) and the current compass direction

all lights light up

dark

....and then the pattern starts over.

Is it possible I tapped into some sensor wires or something? Sandman, any chance you could tell me what color your wires were?

You should have used the two wires on one end 1 and 2. The cal means you need to calibrate the compass there is a how to soemwhere for that. It sounds liek a bad conn making the v1 start repeatedly. Though sometimes they go off twice as you turn the key one then after it starts.

Well, if CAL stays on, then yea, it needs to be calibrated - but this is some sort of crazy cycle/dance of all the functions. And the compass is correct, when displayed - but not the temp. I know we tapped into two wires on the end of the connector...

we used the first two wires...and I tested with a multimeter to make sure that we had the two wires that created a complete circuit...and that was wire 1 and 2.

Wire one white and blue, wire two was black and blue.

Follow up -

Besides one of the tap splices only working barely, we did have the wiring right. The computer was in freakout mode because the console connector was wedged in the wrong place, and was holding down some buttons on the circuit board. Watch those clearances!
