A good friend has a 83 Mustang GT that she is dropping off ay my place for me to work on. She has had it since new and wants it brought back to life. It only has 80,000 on the odo. It's running...That's about all I know. I was counting on you Mustang guys to step in here with some mild performance ideas. This should keep me occupied until I rejoin he L community.

i dont know much about mustangs but i have heard of people putting the gt-40 intakes, heads, and cams in there and making decent power, along with headers, etc

I don't mean to be a downer but the 83 is a carbed non-roller motor and its really not that great. Also, it has a 7.5" rear end. The only way you can really spruce it up is to swap in a 87-93 drivetrain. I will, however, digress for a moment and say that despite the older style engine, those are still a lot of fun to drive....it probably has a 4spd.

A 650 or 700cfm carb, performer rpm intake, gears, and exhaust will really wake that thing up.

If it's only got 80k on the clock it should't need much of anything. Worst case is cap/rotor/wires/plugs and ***a carb rebuild. The car is more likely to fall apart around the drivetrain. Even with the 7.5" rear those things are pretty stout.

Good luck!

....oh yeah. The brakes are horrible. The 87-93's had bigger better brakes. The good news is that that stuff is cheap and pretty much bolts right on.

ditto on what has been said, except the roller motor was introduced in 1985 with a carb. but with that said i say tear out the drive train and go with all 87-93 gear and have a blast with it!

You are not being a downer. I have what I have to work with. But those are the kinds of suggestions that I'm looking for. Carb upgrades, brakes, etc..

True. However it was in only the late 85's and it had e6 heads and a really crappy piston that would not allow for 1.7 roller rockers or any aftermarket cam. 87 is the first year of the "good" motor.

Back in high school the 83 was the chit. You were a god if you had one. Wasn't that the first year of the 5.0?

Actually the first fox body, 5.0 style Mustang, was the 79. The basic chassis design lasted for 14 years!

i believe that i did suggest to go with the 87-93 drive train, for those exact reasons. the parts are also cheap and available everywhere. Here is a web site dedicated to the 79-86 mustangs, maybe these guys would be a good way to see what some people are doing with your year stang.

That's right I now remember the 79 Indy 500 pace car edition's and Cobra's

The 82 was technically the first performance V8 in that body style. I heard somewhere it was the fastest american made car in 82 since the vette technically didnt make an 82? (correct me if i am wrong)

Ford used a marine cam and some crappy 2-barrel autolite carb, but it did have a cool dual snorkel intake and traction lock, but the factory slapper bars did not do much for the axle hop.

I ended up putting in a 91 drivetrain and the quad shocks (highly recommended) with an edelbrock carb. Talk about waking that baby up!!
