For some, guns are a hobby just like any other hobby. Golf, Tennis, Skiing, etc, etc.....whatever. It so happens that several members here enjoy that same hobby. I'll bet if you log into the Model T owners club their hobby is golf and they all talk about it. The problem is you hardly ever hear of some looser shooting a cop in the head or robbing the Quik-e-mart with a snow ski or tennis racquet. So the guns get a bad rap. I think it's a blast to take your pistol, rifle, grenade launcher and go to the range. I'm not much of hunter but I have a great time at the range. Just my .2

That's is exactly the way it is for me. I started shooting guns about 2 years ago and love it. I have never been hunting and really have no desire too. I just have a great time at the range putting holes in paper or shooting army men at my Dad's place.

Look like they have been enjoying the hobby for some time on that land- several blown up and shot up cars.
I'm not a gun enthusiast either but can appreciate those that enjoy it for leisure or hunting.
I did enjoy the destructive capabilities of those machine guns.
I would love to see some German MG42 footage- my grandpa's said the shear sound of that gun during WWII would drop them to the ground or heading for cover.

Uuum...that was just a little gun humor.... All though shooting an M-79 or M-203 is awsome. Guns are not just for animals. Testing your skills at the range does not involve killing anything except paper or metal targets.
You find it odd to shoot a gun? Or do you find it odd that it's enjoyable? Someone outside of the hobby could say the same about Lightnings. "I find it odd that you like a truck".
Maybe it is a Texas thing. I lived in Cali for a time and now that I think of it I didn't know anyone there who owned a gun.

Guns are ok. I have a shotgun somewhere and I used to have a 9mm. I just don't see them as fun as other things. A good example is Tennis. It's fun to run around and volley the ball back and forth. I would love to see some guys volley a bullet back and forth.
I love the outdoors and do a lot of backpacking and camping. I think hunting might be fun. I guess I can understand the allure of the hunt. Shooting targets might be interesting if you get to take a few shots with a few different guns. Before I got married, the boys used to go to the range every now and then and rent 3 or 4 different guns and make an afternoon of it....but only once in a great while....a few times a year. Some of you guys have a lot of guns.
I thought that you were serious about the grenade launcher because you guys have posted up pics of them before and referred to them as toys so I figured one of you guys actually ponied up the dough for one- it could happen!

I don't understand people's fascination with spectator sports like football/baseball/ESPN, etc. and, for that matter, reality shows, video games and these gossipy E!/Jerry Springer/Oprah/The Apprentice/The O.C./American Idol/24/Lost/CSI/Survivor/Alias/Queer-Eye/Nip Tuck/MTV "sheeple", metros and emos that drone on-and-on about other people's lives like those two Pugs and Kelly on 105.3 mornings here. :hammer::evil:rolleyes:
I suppose some people are living vicariously through others in a desperate attempt to wear the latest fashions and seemingly be "hip" and accepted by society.

If/when you ever drop your first deer (or whatever sub-species), it will be the male-equivalent of nailing all the prom-queens in the adjacent counties of your zip-code - figuratively speaking.:bows:D

Maybe it is a Texas thing. I lived in Cali for a time and now that I think of it I didn't know anyone there who owned a gun.
That's all I was trying to say. I bet if you read postings from Lightning groups outside of Texas and especially North, my feeling is that there would be a lot fewer posts about guns. I've lived all over (Indiana, Mass, Cali, Missouri and Texas) and it's a much bigger hobby here. Missouri has a pretty big hunting season too.
I don't begrudge people their hobbies. I'm glad you put your resources towards your interests. It's just not for me.
I have shot guns before. Even a fully automatic M-15 when I was in the Marines. We did a night fire with lots of tracer rounds and it was amazing. I was our platoon high shooter (best shot of about 60 people) but it just didn't "do" anything for me when it ended.
Ronald you're preety funny. :rll:
As I said, I have shot a gun. I don't particulary care for tree huggers. I do eat granola. At least granola bars. And steak is my favorite meal. I have zero desire to go out and shoot it myself and I can't equate the thrill of doing so being better than nailing even one prom queen. :)
For me, it's not my thing and I just find it interesting (nothing more) that so many people here who have Lightnings, also know about, and converse pretty deeply about, firearms.

I think we have some folks in the club that are extemists when it comes to fire arms. Is it unhealthy? I'm not sure, but it is a little unsettling at times. I've never felt like killing an animal made me any more of a man than if I went hiking for a weekend or camping out or taking a weekend kayak trip in the middle of nowhere. Don't have a problem with those that feel different, but to insinuate that real men should feel the urge to kill animals is just plain stupid.
I have a gun cabinet full of guns and my right to own is protected by the constitution (not to mention the NRA of which I am not a member). I like trucks, guns, motorcycles, rock and roll, an occasional beer, and attractive women, but my feeling is, everything in moderation please. And as far as the attractive women goes; thats for looking only (escape clause).

I agree with Sixer. I have a couple guns, know how to shoot them pretty good, enjoy target shooting and skeet shooting but have no desire to kill deer or anything else for meat or trophy. 20 or more years ago I did a bunch of varmint hunting and enjoyed it, clearing farmers fields of equipment damaging varmints was fun - Since I used a scoped 22 the varmints had a sporting chance. I didnt bait them and didnt set up a blind to disguise myself.

Let me echo some of your sentiments. I've hunted all my life, but I've YET to get a thrill out of "dropping" a deer. I definitely get a thrill out of sitting out there in beautiful country quietly being a witness to things much simpler and peaceful than our own existence. As far as shooting them, done plenty of it, but it was a respectful serious thing not to speak flippantly about. Typically shot 4 a year for as far back as I can remember, but that's because it was the only meat I ever ate. (least till I got married and my wife won't think of it - hence I no longer shoot deer)
While I'm on a rant here, let me also say that I've never understood the glory in shooting bucks. I've shot a few in my life, but I've never understood the folks who would shoot a yearling buck over a big fat doe. Personally, I never could figure out a way to cook the horns (and yes I said horns, because I don't want to call them antlers)

oops I messed that up. Anyway, I'm pretty far from being a tree hugger and I wouldn't let you drive a Prius. Plus, I take MRE's when I go packing. Dude, I ride a dirt bike. I an environmentalists worst enemy. I too can't stand to watch sports on TV. Yet I'm not excited about gunning down Bambi. I've actually shot Thumper a couple of times but I can't say that I enjoyed it. The only way I'm going to kill anything is if I'm hungry (does not include rodents).

For me, firearms are one of the tools of my profession, so I have a professional interest in them.
Additionally, they are a hobby for me. I enjoy and participate in several different types of competitive shooting.
I also love to hunt. The pleasure I get from deer hunting or bird hunting is similar to what Jeff56 posted, and I really enjoy eating game that I've taken/dressed/cooked. Varmint hunting is a test if skill, i.e. can i put a bullet on a target the size of a squirrel from over 1/2 mile away in a 25 MPH wind. My hunting passion is predator calling, because you are hunting professional hunters who have an uncanny ability to detect a trap. Wiley Coyote was very aptly named.
I always figured the high correlation between TALON members and firearm enthusiasts was because we're gearheads, which may also incline us to be gadgetheads. And guns are pretty well engineered gadgets. Look at the number of folks on this board who are computer nerds (and I don't mean that negatively). Just a different type of gadget.

To clarify TALON,
I thought I made it abundantly clear in my original post that I was just kidding with QDRHRSE - seeing as he resides in CA. (typically liberal state) and doesn't seem to grasp the firearm/hunting pursuit - which is fine by me. My original post was solely intended as a friendly debate topic.
Quoting the venerable SixPipes: "but to insinuate that real men should feel the urge to kill animals is just plain stupid."
[SIZE=2]
First off, Dennis, as I mentioned above, I didn't insinuate that at all - and I'm no "extremist" either! I don't enjoy the "takedown" in the least. I felt terrible when my only archery 8-ptr. ran off, only to be found the next week by my Grandparent's as they were checking one of the Hereford herds on the Taylor property/160+ acreage. The broad-head hit a leaf/twig moving in the wind and, evidently, missed it's intended mark.
I felt bad when last-year's 9-ptr. took 5-10 secs. to expire as I ran up there.
Also, my Colorado/Indiana brother-in-laws say deer-hunting is HUGE up there, and would like to check-it out the OK. prospects.Hunting's popular all over.
I'm actually surprised I've been "dogged" the way I have here. Where's Uncle-Rocks?:evil
Doug,
Elaborate on the whole "over compensation" point, please. I didn't bait and/or "disguise" myself when I took my 9-ptr. I was scentless and dead-quiet when I took him, as I was walking to my stand. If you've ever hunted whitetail, they're crafty animals.
jeff56,
THEY'RE ANTLERS, DAMMIT! We need to work on your nomenclature.:)
Moonshine,
Very good post. I hope to achieve your marksmanship abilities, one day, through practice with one of the AR-10 .308 high-quality "pedigrees". Dad and I are discussing options/features and gunsmiths.
I think the majority of these posts/replies have been "lost in translation". I went paint-balling with Regan and cousins years ago...it was TOUGH to pull the trigger on a friendly, even paintballing.
I remember first-year law-school at OU, one female class-mate stated in the break-time "pit" that... "Only bad-people shoot guns.". No joke - fact!:hammer::nono: Whatever !!!
It's late, and, I was just looking for friendly firearms/hunting debate surrounding the 2nd Amendment - no more.
Oh, here is a pic. of my familial "hunting-crew". :)

I'm not going to debate you over the issues. However, if you are going to make outrageous statements on this board, you shouldn't complain when someone takes issue. Ronald, my thoughts were along these same lines. When I read your post, I thought to myself this was no "tongue in cheek" post. If it was, it was pretty darned harsh, IMHO. I doubt that you know QDRHRSE very well and you were taking some pretty big liberties there. I would have looked at the post differently if you were posting it to Rocks, whom you know and love. That is why his response was very measured and fair, IMHO.
So from someone that says in your separate post, not the "tongue in cheek" post
