I tore down Lenards engine today. I knew there was a problem with #4 and had to open it up to find it. Here is what I found:

It is a picture of a melted piston that is all. In refrence to this post;

I think what he was actually trying to figure out is what the third pic is. To me it looks like piston pieces in the oil pickup. Was that the stock motor in his truck?

Yeah it looked all original to me.

Ouch, it hurts to see that. Yes, it was all stock in the engine.
For my own (very costly) education, what was the cause of this? Was it from over-boosting on the stock internals or something else?

The combustion temperatures got hotter than hell.

From the mods you listed i dont think that over boosting was the reason.. Ive ran more boost than you for 115k miles... It got realy hot in there tho...

Detonation with extreme prejudice. The detonation ate a groove in the head as well. Once the ring land broke it torched its way down the side. It was ran that way for a while and cost more damage to the crank and cylinder wall.

Does that mean new block or can it be saved w/ sleeves or bore?

The block can be bored a lot of builders are going 20 on new engines to get a few more inches. The machine shop I use says there is enough metal to go 60.

Geez I haven't even had time to take mine in to be checked for these similar symptoms (my post was mentioned in Lenard's other post), it's been parked a couple of weeks now for fear of making it worse. Lenard sorry to see that, I sure hope we don't share the same problem! Speaking of combustion temps what should our EGTs be on these trucks if all is well? Mine stays around 800 during idle, 1100-1200 on the highway 70-75mph, maybe 1300 on short term boost. Maybe I don't want to know:eek: Sorry if I'm hijacking!:bows

Yours run almost even up with mine. I have watched my EGT gage hit 1450 at the big end of a quarter mile pass. I was told to get the hell out of it if I see it getting past about 1400-1450.
It can also vary with where the probe is located. Number five is usually the hottest cylinder in our trucks. My probe is a couple inches into the number five header.

What is an EGT, what does it do, does it come stock on the truck or is it aftermarket, and is it worth it to get one?

Exhaust Gas Tempurature.... not a part.

So what are they using to measure/read it?

A probe is installed in the number 5 header a few inches after the exhaust opening on the head. Heat is probably one of the biggest contributing factors to engine failure. I am betting that in the case of the pictures that started this thread, one would have been reading some extreme temps on their gage. It may have given enough time to stop running the motor before the catastrophic failure we see above.
Here is a link to some general information on EGT's.
