View Full Version : electrical (emissions) problem

Greetings to everyone~

I went to get my truck inspected last Friday and it failed all emission tests. Not because it was running poorly, but because the ECU was complaining that the truck needs to 'run more'. Apparently, the computer is resetting every time i turn the truck off. This is evident because the trip odometer is resetting every time i power cycle the truck. I have a good battery and unfortunately, the truck is stock for the most part. :o

I did notice some anomalies after getting the transmission overhauled about 6 months ago...
1. The gauges max out for ½ a second or so and then return to their normal position when the ignition is first turned on.
2. The autosenor for the headlights doesn't seem to detect sunlight anymore (they stay on during the day if I leave it on auto).

If it has anything to do with the transmission, i'll have to take it elsewhere because i refuse to let that guy touch it again. :hammer:

I thought I would post something on here before taking it in to the shop.
Yalls suggestions or recommendations are always greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks!!!

Kirk,
Double check your battery- try a local Autozone for a load test. I had a similar problem when my original battery was going out.

dont forget that the battery is NOT maintenance free - I learned that the hard way on my 2000

IF the gauges are sweeping each time you start the truck your battery isnt good. Either needs to be charged or replaced... When you replace it drive it a good bit then go back and get it inspected...

Even though the truck is starting just fine (even in cold weather)??

I thought I just replaced the battery last year. I will still have it checked out in the next couple of days (the battery that is)...
I think I might have to just track down a sticker & start thinking about finally making modifications to the truck now that I'm starting to have mechanical/electrical problems.

Thanks for the info and i'll keep ya posted. :twitch:

:( It's not the battery...

It can also be just the cables needing a good cleaning or loose. Battery or cables are almost always the problem even though it will start fine.

:( It's not the battery...

dont trust autozone to check a battery.. in my old civic the battery was dead as hell.. but autozone checked it and said it was fine.. still had to jump start it everytime. New battery solved my problem. Hell come borrow my battery if you dont want to buy one.. Just put it in, drive a bit and go get it inspected.. It should be good still...
