Inspired by last years gas prices i decided to lighten the load on my wallet by getting a smaller but unique and possibly somewhat cool car. I originally was thinking about picking up an old mini cooper but that never quite materialized. So i heard from a friend that he knew a guy that had a rolling chassis of a 1971 Datsun 1200. I never even knew what the hell a 1200 was. i did rather like the looks of the car, i kind of thought that it looked like a 70 nova but squished smaller. so i picked up the car for little to nothing and with the help of a friend crammed some rather cool goodies in the car.

This should take some of the daily driving load off my L and still should be plenty fun to drive.

It has an upgraded T3/T4 hybrid intercooled turbo on it pushing about 20psi, SDS fuel and spark management, shortened izuzu impulse rear end with 4.10s and tons of other stuff. I also built an equal length header for it i have yet to put on, made from tig welded 304 stainless 1/4 thick wall.
It does about 400hp in a 1700lb car on pump gas.

It still needs a lot of work. For starters it needs a wash job, interior, roll bar, matching wheels, some bling on the engine, and some decent paint. the paint thats on it isnt horrible but just old. Ive also rewired the entire car, built a new harness.

So whatya think?

I like it also. I was thinking as I was scrolling down the pictures you had probably re-wired it.

I wish I had your kind of skills. I can't imagine even beginning a project like that. I bet it will be fun.

Best of luck to you and keep us updated with pics.

Very cool, but I doubt it will get good mileage.;)

It reminds me of a little of a 70's car in my garage.

well its not so much skill as it is a lack of $$ to pay someone to do it  . jk everything is soldered and heat shrunk for good permanent connections.

The only thing i regret so far on it is the 6puck unspung clutch with an aluminum flywheel in a light weight car. its bounces around like an f'in buckin' bronco

ive seen that car ;)

yea like all my other project cars, they start out with mileage in mind and then it all goes to chit. everything i own guzzles gas. but no matter, now i only have a 2 mile drive to work

400HP....1700LB's. Wow. If you could get traction that thing would be incredible. Probably a low 10 second ride. You got skills brother!

yup it gets a little rediculous driving that thing, its a blast and a death wish. almost like driving a wet paper bag.

overall though i totally dig the turbo stuff. in 1st gear youll ease off the line and then 2nd BOOM boost! the rearend goes nuts. itll spin em' at any speed and most of the time without a downshift.

i have a buddy who just picked a 1200 up and is putting a 350z motor and tranny in, he'll have some shoehorning to do but he says he'll make it go. thats should be a real kicker with a tub and a 4 link. bout as dangerous as an old dragged out Anglia
