Ford sales plunge 31 percent in Oct.
No. 2 automaker had record sales in same month last year
THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
DETROIT, Nov. 1 — Ford Motor Co. on Friday reported U.S. vehicle sales dropped 31 percent in October compared with record sales in the same month a year earlier.
OCTOBER SALES OF FORD, Lincoln and Mercury brand cars were down 38.8 percent compared with the same month in 2001. Light truck sales — including pickups, sport-utility vehicles, vans and minivans — fell 32.6 percent.
Ford blamed the drop on a tough comparison with last year, when the auto maker, helped by the lure of no-interest financing, broke a 24-year old sales record.
Ford, the No. 2 U.S. auto maker after General Motors Corp., said its Jaguar unit reported sales slightly lower this October compared with a year ago.
The auto maker’s Land Rover unit has sales that were up 48 percent from October 2001, and its Volvo unit saw sales drop 22.7 percent from a year earlier.
The company had 27 selling days in October 2001 and 2002.
