I stirred up a snake while working at the land this weekend. I figured a wise old TALON member would know the breed if you will.
It was less than 2" in diameter and about 4ft long. It was solid dark brown/black for the most part with a distinctively lighter last foot toward the tail. It was a lighter almost transparent color. It was round headed and very fast almost moving in a straight line. I am guessing some kind of rat/chicken snake.

Not sure what kind, but most poisonous snakes have a diamond shaped head

Sounds like a Texas Brown Snake.

I don't think the Texas Brown snake grows past 14 inches though.

Could have been one of these guys or similar:

Probably just one of the King snake family - had those all over the place growing up in eastern New Mexico. Description is pretty close to what I remember.

Thats what I was thinking too. We have those all over our land on Lake Fork.

I had one on the empty lot in front of my house about 3 weeks ago. a neighbor alerted me and since I'm from the old school of "the best snake is a dead snake ", we pounded it with rocks and a hoe.:hammer: dead snake :)
he thinks it was a rat snake, no matter, dead snake....:hammer: = :)

Don't kill snakes in residential areas, they will keep the attic rats in check which have been really bad in our neighborhood this year. We haven't had them yet but my 3 other neighbors have.
Maybe I have a snake somewhere, maybe under the shed, as the rabbits and squirrels have disappeared recently even with the Pecan tree shedding nuts?
Either that or they all died of de-hydration.

In honor of recent events.
:ron: , when I was 5 years old and Dad was in Vietnam the grandparents/parents tell me I grabbed a small Northern Diamondback by the head somehow and brought it to them as my new pet. I don't remember it but they still claim it is true.
When Dad returned from Vietnam with a BOA, which I do remember, Mom said no way, I was very sad.

Sounds like a coachwhip to me. Slender for their length and extremely fast in a straight line. Almost impossible to catch.

As I expected, good one Dennis. I'll leave him to catch my rats and vermin.

With all this consctuction here, and the concrete pile in the back, I've been surprised we've only spotted one snake here. My foreman told me he saw somthing in the trenches last week, before the pour, when they were watering the soil to compact it. He said the part he saw (last half, maybe) was 3-3.5ft long, and had red or orange coloration in it. He only saw the tail, but he told us to watch out in the garage, it might slip in there to get away from the heat or the concrete pour (if they didn't give it a Mafia burial, anyway). Personally, I would relocate it to the back half of the property, or maybe toss it under the house, and let it eat the rabbits under there. :d
