A judge has ordered EchoStar Communications to disable the digital video recorders used by several million subscribers to its Dish Network satellite TV service because they infringe on patents held by TiVo.
Thursday's ruling from U.S. District Judge David Folsom in Marshall, Texas, demands that within 30 days, EchoStar must basically render useless all but 192,708 of the DVR units it has deployed.

Glad I switched to FIOS TV

wow ... big win for TiVo. I love my TiVo, but it's finally on it's last leg which is no surprise since it's been running about 5 years straight. I went ahead and scheduled FIOS to be installed next Thursday ... hopefully I'm happy with my decision. I do like the new Home Media DVR where you can watch what's on your DVR from any room in the house.

yeah, I saw that on Good Morning America today. I'm with Dish so I'm sure I will have to do something else. Maybe DirectTV.

Oh, f**k. Looks like I'll be hammering the crap out of Dish in the near future, because without that feature, what's the point of having them in the first place? And I am NOT going back to VCRs, nor am I buying a DVD recorder or a separate TIVO: either they come up with a solution, or I find me a new provider WITH a proper solution.

EDIT: from the story:

update A federal appeals court on Friday blocked a lower-court ruling that would have forced satellite television provider EchoStar Communications to stop selling many of its digital video recorders, EchoStar said Friday.

yeah, same thing I found. Hopefully, they'll settle up with TiVo and not disable them. In the meanwhile, I found out my box has a USB port on it, so I'm gonna see if I can export some of the media to a CDR or a hd.
