I am considering building a shop at my land so I can work/live there. I would like to get some customer feedback as to who would make the drive or not. The land is basically 25 miles south of Downtown Dallas off of I45 and FM660 outside Ferris zip 75125. I can be at the Downtown Hooters in 25 minutes from the land. It is 8 miles off of I45 to the southeast. I would also offer a reasonably priced pickup/drop off service to help out if needed. Thanks for your input!:tu:

You havn't worked on my truck yet, but I am picky; so if I needed something done & I didn't trust myself to do it, I'd make the drive. Hopefully I'll be seeing you soon for the tranny in my Gen1.

I would and I think this is a great idea Terry. The brand new shop should be much nicer than the current one and worth the extra drive IMHO.

I think it would be closer for me.;)
Your reputation is very good, you should be able to attract the business to you, but who will do the other stuff that your partner did?

He lives 8 miles from my land and would be grateful for any jobs I had for him to step in on from time to time.

You have to think about the issues that having your work and your home being so close will bring

AND try to consider that many of your customers cant take off work to come SO far during the week, which would require LOTS of weekend work.

Finally the number you CANT quantify is the amount of work you are losing now because of the relativly remote location and whether you would expect that to go up or down ...

Then theres the cost of the lift, compressor, welder and all the other infrastructure.

I guess Jimmy is just going to go live under a rock ?

43 miles and estimated 1 horur from my casa to here

as compared with 28 miles and 42 min to the old shop here

I havent voted.

The current location requires me to take a day off work to get anything done. New location would be worse for me. There are few jobs that I can justify taking a day off work for. My point was that Terry is likley missing a LOT of GRAVY work IF there are others like me.

To put it another way - You have to REALLY REALLY want to ONLY have Terry do the work to drive 80 miles RT.
The new location will be putting the core Arlington group just as far away..

37.4 miles

Putting on my business hat that means that he is likley passing up potential business.

No question. I would drive out in a heartbeat.

I wouldn't think Terry gets a lot of walk up business on his side of things from the current location so I don't think he is losing anything there.

I'm a DIY type of guy until I get over my head or don't have the expertise or tools needed to complete the job. In that case I rely on Terry for my truck or other vehicles because I'm picky who works on them and who I can trust to do it right.

I would make the drive or use the pickup/delivery service depending upon my available time.

I'll still bring it down. It's only another 7 miles for me, but even if was a lot further, I'd still bring it.

I think the question is, who of us would feel comfortable sending our trucks to someone new. Answer; nobody. Doug's point is well taken though. If Terry wants to retain his current business it doesn't look like there's a problem. But if he wants to grow his business by being more readily available to a larger number of people, then it will be more difficult to attract new customers from his place. So that is the question, whether tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows........:D

Agree, but most of his current business has completed most of their mods...unless we blow an engine, trans, or rear at LFest, and yes we would all go to Terry for repairs independent of location.

My only advice would be to expand your resume to include Powerstrokes and new generation Mustangs. I know you already work on those vehicles, but I dont know that I have seen you advertise that heavily. Everyone in North Texas (that is smart) knows that you're really the only competent tuner for L's, but there are several mustang tuners. Not sure about powerstrokes though...

Either case, I would start advertising on boards like this, on other boards identifying your services. I would also start talking to off road parts vendors, to see if they would float business you way for diesel performance tuning.

Terry, Check your pm's ... I may be able to hook you up with some stuff for your new shop.

Agreed....add Harleys, and the Powerstrokes.

Also look into other "high" dollar cars where most folks dont do their own work like Vipers, SRT10's :throw: etc.

I have not pursued the high line due to the shop situation, those customers expect a little more than Meadlins, it is rough enough for you already. I also am doing well to keep up with what I offer so far. If I do get slow or see a change in trends I will use that time to more aggressively pursue diesel and other lines. It takes a lot of research for each make of car to learn what the best methods are. I have not been able to study other vehicles like I use to with the L and C5's. That is another thing that will come when the work slows down. Kind of a natural cycle I guess. Thanks for all the helpful ideas.

To answer the poll: when it comes time for me to get a tune, or to get mod work done that I don't think I can do, I'll hit Terry up, simply because of the recommendations thru here and the evidence of his quality work.

On the OTHER hand, Doug is right: he's passing up alot of business.

However, I can see one way right off to correct this: by being open on Saturdays and Sundays; and close on Monday/Tuesday. IF you have to have a weekend (which is a pretty good idea to beign with), who says it *has* to be on a Saturday/Sunday?? It can be any pair of days you wish, or even split them up.

I have not yet used Terry mostly because I haven't done much to the truck. If I do something I usually like to do it myself. So if I ever need Terry, it will be for something major.

If it is major work I like two things 1) someone that I can trust to do it right and 2) someone close by for the problems that always arise with major modifications.

Just my opinion, take it for what it is worth.

I would make the drive, but someone did make a good point. Most people will not be able to take off during the week, so weeknds would be the only option. The pick up and delivery service is a huge plus!:D

Terry I'd make the drive to your new shop but honestly would visit more often for maintenance and minor repairs if we were closer. Have you considered moving between Mesquite and Richardson? I'd be there every week unti I was broke. lol. Hope it works out for you.

Hmmmm, I guess since I trailer my vehicle 7 hours one way to gain your expertise, I must be a "I'll travel". I've been playing with L's for 5 years, I own one that is pretty strong and one for my son that is relatively mild. Terry is one of the best I've seen when it comes to expertise. Terry, next year I need you to figure out the 4 link solution and we will have another project. Anyway, worth the miles and a beer or two.

Thanks Dan, I think that is your L in the trailer on my website. It was the first trip for my new rig and the main reason I shelled out the coin on a Super Duty and enclosed trailer. I have since hauled many great customers to and fro and supported some great cross counrty trips and racing events:tu: .
