View Full Version : Recent Fog Light Replacement + Rain = PITA

Well I took the truck to Don Davis to replace my burnt out fog light about 2 weeks ago. I turned my lights on this morning and one side was dark again. Checked out my light it had LOTS of moisture in it :( (the whole lens was fogged over). So I called the service department about it to schedule another apointment.... and they said because it was the same bulb they would have to diagnose the electrical components of it and it would take 2+ hrs!! I said bullshit, its bad enough the last time I brought it in it took yall ONE hr to change ONE bulb!! Then I preceeded to tell her the lens has water in it, so the bulb got wet and burnt out because yall didnt seal the light back up. She then said Oh well bring it in and well see what the problem is.

That sucks, what a PITA.

If they don't get the seal on the back all the way on it happens.

I hate stealership service departments :throw:

Yep after they finish with it this time guess Ill crawl under there and make sure its done right... at least its under WARRANTY!! Still doesnt make me feel any better about my wasted time tho.

That's the thing, they like to act like they're doing you a favor because they replace it under warranty. Nevermind that you have at least 5-6 hours invested in it yourself once this is done, they owe you money if you ask me.

Something you need to remember about warranty: as a SVT product, they are supposed to supply you a rental vehicle for the time they have your truck. Smack 'em with that, and see how fast they repair it. Chances are they need to replace the entire housing, and hope they put in the so-called "new" thicker-lens light. They replaced mine the first time with the old-style; the second time I went to do it, they denied warranty because it was outside the 12k mile limit for "appearance" items. :hammer:

I know the feeling. We just took our L in to have ABS looked at. They called back and said that our brakes were worn out (30K miles) and that they wanted to replace the pads and the rotors. I told them that I would do it myself. So after dealing with them all day I finally got the truck back. The next afternoon I pull the tires to have a look at the pads and rotors only to find out that they still look almost new. Both the pads and rotors are in excellent condition. :mad: So that was another afternoon wasted.

What was your problem with the ABS? I doubt seriously that pad/rotor condition would cause trouble with it, especially sine you found out that the pads/rotors were fine. I think I would scream bloody murder over that, and get the real problem fixed.

Joe Myers Ford replaced my foglights every year before my 3/36 warranty ran out. When the last pair started cracking, I just went with some aftermarket 4.25 inch Pilot lights with glass lenses. No problems since.

BTW.... the Pilot lights are at least three times brighter than the POS factory lights. And the glow rings are pretty cool too. :cool:

LOL it gets better!! Went by today at 4:30 to get the bulb replaced... they said they couldnt get it done b4 they close!! :rll: :rll: :rll: . They close at 5:00 BUT I talked to a tech and he said they are scheduled until 6:00 :rolleyes: . WOW I was speachless. Think this is my last outing w/ these clowns, Ill look for another circus elsewhere.

Btw those fogs look great where did you get them?? How much??

That was what I thought. I went in to talk to the tech yesterday. He told me that the problem is that we have two different types of tires on the truck. The fronts are Hankooks with a treadwear of 400ish and the backs are Goodyears with the treadwear of 200ish. He said that the fronts are locking up quicker than the rears which is triggering the ABS. I asked him what that had to do with the pads/rotors and he said that they were worn. We had an argument about that as well. In the end I doubt that I will be back. Don Davis has probably just lost any future service on my vehicles and my new car purchase will not be from them.

They treated me good for a while, but that has changed ever since they got a new service manager.

Yep, that happens when a dealer changes service managers, the new one tries to make a name buy cutting every corner he can, just so he can make the bottom line look good for a while. In the long run, tho, it will cost them business and long-term loyalty.

And that bit about the "two different tires" thing causing a problem is bunk. If your front ABS is kicking in, it's simply because the sensor is detecting impending lockup. Of course, something else to consider, is that most proportioning valves in production vehicles are set up to lock the fronts first, because if you lock the rears first, you'll bring the tail around. NOT a fun thing. :eek2:

What EXACTLY are you experiencing?? I think that info is needed here.

Yah, I'm looking at those, too... I think stylinconcepts has one of similar size that has LED light rings.

Did you do a post or thread on the install on your lights? just wondering how hard the mod is to get them in my 2002

Nope, never did a "how to".

A fellow HALO member just bought a pair and will probably want my help with them, so maybe I'll take some pictures during the install.

It's not hard, just takes a little time. The universal bracket that comes with the kit is useless for our application, so I fabbed up a way to bolt them in by drilling two holes through the back case of each light and tapping in some threaded rod. They lined up perfectly and do not vibrate.

I just ordered my extra pair of Pilot lights from JC Whitney ($71.98 delivered) and they are supposed to be here in a week to 10 days. Once I receive them, I'll mod them up for the Lightning airdam and do a "how-to" with pictures.

Make sure the end of the conduit around the wires going to your fog lights are pointed down,i noticed a while back mine where up and collecting full of water when driven in the rain.Fixed with a few tie raps.:tu:

The install is complete and it turned out great. Started at about 10:30am and finished up three hours later. The owner of the truck opted to go with the blue glow rings. :cool:

Exactly.
The glow ring circuits tie into the parking lamps and are only visible when in the parking lamp or headlight-only mode. One the foglight switch is activated, they disappear.

I've never seen one fog up or take on water. Never seen one crack or shatter either.

Check the rubber O-ring on the back plate by loosening the two screws holding it on. The only problem I've had was one bulb burned out (no big deal, easily replaced). Been a great $75 mod for over three years now.

got mine installed lastnight, and they are definitley worth the 75 bucks, they are super bright compared to the factory junk, im still try to figure out how to get them adjusted just right as far as light angle but other than that there great:tu:

I adjusted the height by pulling my garage door down and placing the front end of the truck about 15 feet away. When the fog lights are deployed, you can see where the bulk of each beam is hitting the door, as well as where the light patterns cross in front of the truck.

I kept the height of my beams rather low so that they don't blind anyone... about one foot from the base of the garage door. The surrounding light patterns should cross at the center of the truck and I was able to adjust this by manipulating the lights by hand. Once they are where you want them, they'll stay there and if installed correctly, will not vibrate.
