Walmart has a deal on the Remington 710 .273, 30-06 and 7mm with a 3x scope for a little over $300. I am looking for a deer/hog rifle and was wanting to know if this would be an ok one for the money? I'm not looking to buy the best thing out there just something servicable. Any opinions?

the remmy 710 is a POS. For a great shooting rifle under 300 get a savage stevens 200. They are excelent for the money. THey have been reviewed by many magazines and ALWAYS seem to get great reviews. Especially for a gun that cost $250. I have one in .223 and it shoot 1" groups at 100 yards. Bass pro often has sales for the 270 and 30-06 for $199. There is no better deal. You can get the stevens 200 in numerous short and long actions. Do yourself a favor and get the stevens or save your money instead of the 710.

Are you sure they didn't mean .270? I am not familiar with a .273 caliber. I know Rem 700's are legendary, not sure what the 710 is..
Ruger and Savage are economical but decent choices as well. Did you ever guy a black rifle?
If you go larger than .270 or .308 calibers then you get into signifcant recoil. This limits the number of rounds you can comfortably fire. Last weekend on opening day deer season my buddies went to hunt. One of the guys brought a new 300 win mag. He had to sight it in Friday and hunted Saturday. He was hating life after 20rds of 300 win mag. I have shot over 200rds of 308 in a day and felt fine.
You will easily spend as much or more on the scope and mounts than you will the rifle. Unless of course you find a pkg deal from a large store. Don't be afraid to check out Dicks, Academy, Bass Pro or Cablea's as well. All of them carry decent equipment.
An accurate rifle is broken down like this:
1) scope- If you can't see it you can't hit it. Buy the most glass you can afford.
2) trigger- An upgraded trigger assy can greatly improve long distance accuracy 300yds+
3) barrel- heavy barrels are more accurate for repeated fire past 3-5rds at a time.
4) stock- have a gunsmith bed the receiver and float the barrel for increased accuracy.

After reading your post.. A 3 power scope is not good for much at all past 100yds. Even BB guns and 22 rifles get 4x scopes pretty regularly. Scope is where the money should be spent.

After some research I found it is a 3x9 scope. I say it is a great 350 rifle combo! 243 is a very smooth caliber though underpowered for some larger game or misplaced shots. Dunno what caliber I would get.. I would probably lean towards the 243 for small Texas Deer and recreational shooting. The larger calibers are not as fun or cheap to shoot..

Yes, you can't go wrong with the Remington 700 line. Uncles and cousins have taken prong-horn and mule-deer with wonderful success in CO/NM with Remingtons.

One such story I was told was that my uncle was trying to hit a running pronghorn at approx. 300-400 yds. My cousins were watching through binoculars at the "puffs" in the dirt where the 30-06 rds. were hitting. They were calling in the shots and my uncle had to actually fire approx. 4 ft. ahead of the monster pronghorn buck to actually nail him. :eek2: He's on the barn-wall.

As for Ruger, I've used the Ruger SS Mk VII .30-06 for my first 8-ptr. at 109-yds. - personal hand-reloads, I might add. knana My 9-ptr. was with basically the same rifle, but in .300 Win. Mag. at approx. 40 yrds. off-hand. walking as the 9-ptr was as a fast-trot.

The only Remington product I have in my current line-up is my Remington Stainless/Synthetic .50 black-powder, which we shoot the .45 sabots - not sure of the powder charge.

Obviously, my younger brother gets more use out of my gear than I do.:hammer::evil

This particular 11-ptr. was taken recently near dusk at approx. 40-50 yrds. with my black-powder - iron-sights, mind you. After the smoke cleared and Dad and Regan tracked him for a while, they recovered the buck.

Half of that venison is going in my freezer very soon, btw. :D I held the antler-rack this weekend and it's very respectable.:tu:

For size comparison, younger-brother Regan is 6 1-2" and ~210 lbs. Fat bastard! :D

But, yes, Remingtons are fine firearms IMHO, Adam.

I have been using a 20+ yr old Savage 270 and works like a dream still. Plan on getting the Rem 700 ADL 30-06 as soon as everything gets situated. Runs about $500 to $575 I believe. My unc just got a smalll 8 pt at the farm with a 7mm but his scope is not sighted so got him in the back and had to get close and take a second shot.

Remington 700's and remington 710 are NOT the same thing. The 700's are legendary great guns....the 710's are a poor excuse for a budget gun. I witnissed this first hand this past weekend. A guy had a 710 in 270 and it was the most innaccurate gun i have seen. He hit my paper from two benches over. Even the Range operator was having trouble getting a group of three shots closer than 5-6 inches at 100 yards with that gun. IMHO i wouldn't get a 710. do some research and look into other budget rifles.

This is the rifle I suggest.....I own one and I plan on getting another one in either 308 or 7mm-08. The savage stevens 200 can easily be found for $250...and it worth every penny!

I have been reading on several forums that the 710 is a POS. I have also read a few magazine articles that say it is the greatest budget combo ever. Maybe I'll just look into that Savage you posted.

I would recommend the 30-06. This round can be used to hunt darned near anything out there and the kick from it is what I would call moderate. It also happens to be the one with the widest selection of ammo. I could have sworn the scope that Remington puts on that weapon was a 3-9x. Which basicly means it will magnify the object anywhere from three to nine times...depending on what you set it on.

That is a great starter weapon...IMHO.

Edit..... Here is a link to a review of it when it first came out in 2001 http://www.galleryofguns.com/shootingTimes/Articles/DisplayArticles.asp?ID=781

LOL....I post that it looks like a good weapon, then I find this forum. http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=1486079

Most of those guys seem to dislike it. I dunno...I have owned many Remington rifles and not had trouble with any of them. But, then again, I have not purchased one in many years. Maybe they are falling in quality...who knows. Do a google search and see what you find.

Yep, the 30-30, .308 and .30-06 are all nice rounds for deer/hog. The 06 is getting up there in firepower for big-stuff like elk, etc. It's not that hard to manage the recoil.

I'll be running either the Mini-14 or 30-30 this year as I don't have time to scope and sight it in with my schedule now.

Good luck, Adam and let us know.

Ronald speaking of sighting I was looking at the lasers you put in the chamber of the gun to check the sight. Seem pretty cool but I have no idea how accuratethey are. They look like bullets and fit perfect into whatever gun you have.

Kyle,

I've seen them too. Looks like a good idea as a laser-beam shoots 100% straight - coherent light. It's just up to the shooter to really know his gun, ammo, scope and ballistics tables.

Most has already been adressed, but here's my $.02;

Rem 700 and Rem 710 are two entirely different critters. No personal experience with the 710 series, but I've heard the same gripes others have.

I am a big fan of Savage for a "budget" rifle. I have yet to see one that won't shoot amazingly well for a factory production rifle at any price.

For Texas deer and hogs I'd go with the .270. Big enough/heavy enough bullet for hogs, and minimal recoil. Ammo selection almost as large as the .30/06, and no short action/long action argument between the two.

Ditto Terry's remarks about optics and triggers.

Very good, Adam. :tu: FYI, I was speaking with a cousin of mine at Thanksgiving - he tricked-out his Savage 7mm Rem. Mag. with a full-float bull bbl., after-mkt. stock/trigger/etc. and plenty of "glass".

He's poppin' crows at ~200 yds, now. That thing is muzzle-heavy as all-hell.

At the risk of being a little sideways ----- when you say HOG gun, I assume you mean wild hogs, in which case I would recommend a pump shotgun with rifle sights. Up here a long shot is 50 yards and in most cases less than 25 yards. You want something that will hit with a lot of lead and go through their 'armor'. A 50 cal sabotted slug works quite nicely. If you want a good all around caliber, I agree with Rocks on the 30/06 but even though I am a 30/06 bigot, the .308 will shoot much much better all conditions being equal.

Just got back from my first ever deer hunt. Saw 13 deer between yesterday morning and this morning. I shot a young buck yesterday with my cousins .300 (looks like he has the same scope you have Rocks, has a level in it when you look down the glass) This morning I saw a doe and popped her with my 30-06 that i just bought. This gun is perfect so far, 1 shot 1 kill. My dad shot a buzzard at about 100yards with a 6mm and then took a buck this morning with the 6mm. Took 'em to the processor this morning and are waiting for the meat. I might go back next weekend and try to get some more. I'm hooked now!
