I thought Colt engineers designed them so it would not insert but one way only? Mine is not beside me to verify at this time:hammer: .

the mags are keyed at one end and the magwell is notched for it. should only be insertable one direction

No you are not, anyone referring to a magazine as a clip is a loser. There is a distinct historical difference between clips and mags study it!;)

I'll have to agree here. Big difference between a magazine and a clip.
It's like when Dad refers to a whitetail's rack as "horns". That grates my nerves for some reason - and I think Dad knows it. :evil
They are technically antlers as they are shed every year. Horns are not - like say a longhorn or maybe a Cape Buffalo.
Along the same lines, Dad and I took the Liberty to one of our hunting properties this weekend and he referred to the Liberty as a "car". :tex:hammer::tongue:
Get the nomenclature right, people!:evil

I apologize to anyone I offended by calling a magazine a clip. I understand the difference now and will never make that mistake again. :d For anyone that does not know and does not want to offend anyone this is it: "A CLIP is a simple device that holds rounds together for the easy loading of a magazine. Some weapons, like the M1 Garand (1936 by the way, not WWII) and the Italian Carcano rifles required that the clip actually go into the magazine to function. Others, you tossed away the clip after loading the magazine."

Yes, the Liberty is no truck by any semantic stretch, but by no means a "car" as it has a rail-frame with optional 4x4.
Nice little rig, but I might sell it, but it's a sporty Plano get-about and can get me to my deer-stands. While the L is garaged.
Hell, :0fftopic I thought about selling the L and Liberty both and starting anew with a new 07/08 4x4 Super-Duty or H2 Truck. A catharsis of sorts, if you will.

I know I know, but living in someone elses house requires a certain amount of compramise. If you were 20 years younger we could have been roomates and had a venerable fortress to call home:beer: . I miss my little man being at the ready. I stopped by and saw him the other day standing at attention in the safe. He is a lot shorter than the other rifles but he is my favorite CQB/entry machine. Depending on the situation he can speak loudly or softly when needed;) . Too bad I can't leave him to anyone in my will:hammer: . I know, I always thought it was the same thing. I asked a few people today about it and they did not know the diff either so I don't feel too dumb. As long as I know how to shoot them it's all good and hopefully after this weekend I can post a pic of the big hog I am going to get. :d A guy recently shot a 504lb in Jack county and thats where I will be. Been seeing some huge rubs out there atleast 3 feet tall so we will see. :tu:

Since Dennis trying to get this thread back on topic, I am going to post a question to take it back :0fftopic
I have a Ruger Mini-14 .223 Ranch Rifle.. its been in a case sitting for years,, not been taken out or oiled or anything for several years.. question is, is it safe to even use? should I take it someplace (need advice here) and have it looked at? really need some constructive advice here..
I also have a Ruger 9mm revolver that uses 3 shot clips for fast loading. It too suffers from mal- use.. what should be done with it as well.. both guns were bought probably close to 30 years ago..
Thanks

Dana,
Assuming that rust hasn't pitted the bore, the Mini-14 should be fine to shoot after a thorough cleaning and oiling.
As for the Ruger 9mm revolver, it should NOT be shot. It should be sold to your favorite TALON Sgt-at-Arms at a riduculously low price so that he may dispose of it in a safe manner. JK. Same applies to it as the Mini, but I always liked those, so if you ever want to get rid of it.......

you mean that 30 yr old guns like this have any value?
I was thinking I needed to take them to a gunsmith to have them evaluated.
I havent shot over a dozen shots in the Mini-14 since I have owned it.. I have only done a few boxes of rounds in the handgun..
Brian, as always, thanks for the advice. :tu:
Dana
As an aside, there werent that many hand guns that werent revolvers back then and they had more of a tendency to jam than guns do now.. so I bought a revolver because I didnt want it to jam.. I had planned on going hunting with the Mini-14 but just never got to it.. now I am getting into shooting with a compound bow instead..still not sure about hunting, but will do 3D and techno though.

Dana, you and Brian should see my piddlin' little "collection", consisting of a 1910-manufactured Colt .25 auto, and a (I think) 189x-190x (not sure, can't find info on the web on the serial number) O&H .38 Special long barrel with nickel finish. When I got them from the estate in 1995, they had to hammer the shells from the cylinder in the .38, because they both had been sitting in a shoebox since 1938. :eek2:

Blued Ruger Mini-14 Ranch Rifle, assuming it's in good shape, low $300's, call it $325-350. Extra mags would add to that.
I'm presuming the revolver is an SP-101 model. Depending on which variation, and again on condition, somewhere between $200-275.

It's my understanding that the SP-101 Ruger variants in the 9mm config. use the half-moon clips that position the rounds properly.
The traditional cartridges for the SP revolver head-spaces off the case-rim - the 9mm is a one-off for the SP-101 line, so to speak, as the 9mm head-spaces off the case-mouth - hence the need for the half-moon clip.
I believe in WWII, the US issued revolvers that used the .45 ACP rds. in 1/2 moon clips, as well. They head-space on the case-mouth, as well - hence the need for a half-moon clip.
