You should start to remove the side steps to find more dirt:

After this is done you have to demount the rear to remove the plastic caps:

Use some Britemax to get it all clean

mines worse than both of yours.... nothing like driving so called roads in alverado for 6months... mud turns to cement on your truck.. its been 2 years and im still finding clobs of the crap in places i didnt know where there
