The cause of Rila's engine failure was detoanation with extreme prejudice in #4 cylinder. You can see the plug melted down as did the cylinder head around the plug. The rest of the engine looked good so far.

Wow. And to think this detonation wasn't audible? That's a bit scary to me.

The detonation occured at the 3-OD shift at the end of the quarter. Basically a split second and too late to get out of it. Probably why it was only one cylinder. Maybe I should have gone for the C-16... Ah, but Go_rila is in good hands and will be back on the road soon. knana

I would have to look through dat a for the exact number but 1 point in a/f take 3-4 octane to run the same timing. The a/f should have been mid 11's. Kenne Bell publishes a recommended 11.1:1 A/F for stock block trucks. Jim and other tuners are running 12.0 max lean but they also run straight 116 fuel and built engines. Most tuners have also backed off on timing in general. I am not sure which tune or fuel you were running. But when it comes to saving an engine there is no substitute for 116. Especially when mixing with existing pump gas. There is always a lean cylinder it seems and it can be hard to find it without damage. You can't just take an engine out and run it to the edge. To tune the most out of an engine you need to make short pulls and pull the plugs the check the burn in each cylinder etc. Which nobody really wants to do that so you just try and run a safe known timing number.

This was the cleanest pan I have ever seen. There was just a small piece of rod and piston skirt in there. I guess the rest of the rod is still @ Thunder Valley. Only one rod let go on the cylinder that detonated. The rest of the bearings and pistons looked young and nimble. I did find something loose in the heads from a DIY valve cover install;) .

Hey Dennis I don't know what your planning for the rebuild. But if you need them I have some stock pistons and rods I'll donate for the cause.

I would have guessed a much messier pan with a hole in the block. Never saw any parts on the track. Another built motor in the club.:burnout:

#4 rod/piston and #8 rod/piston. The rod section missing is somewhere on the Thunder Valley property.

Looking through the block from the hole in #4 to the #8 side of the block.

I have been keeping the project pretty quiet. We had to take the used short block apart and do some machining. Then we ran into issues with the new heads and fixed those. So all of that required a few weeks of labor, parts, and shipping etc. One vendor sold me parts that were not actually in stock so I had to cancel/relocate them and re order those. Just the usual hassles of the aftermarket. We are about done with reassembly now and will drop it in shortly.

What a project, many little things learned with the new components used this time around. Well now there is a complete engine and transmission rebuilt and ready to install. The clutches were burning but the general condition was exceptional all things considered. The original '99 engine and trans looked like a 2-3yr old 40K mile internals as far as wear/condition go.

I guess I'll have to get a new TV stand when it starts happening.;)

But "officially" we would need cages/jackets/etc to run faster, that is why I stopped at mid 11s on a street truck. Went too far on the 911 and like some with heavily modded trucks it just sits.

The plants are the winter mode in the garage, ready for that to end.

Well, the GBP (Go_rila Badassification Project) is coming to a close and he will soon be parked at the house. It will be two months tomorrow that we had our little issue at Thunder Valley Dragway. Pretty remarkable when you think about it. The whole drive train was overhauled and new parts added and tweaked and all in two months while working on other vehicles and doing other assorted stuff. Just wanted to reiterate how fortunate we at TALON are to have someone of Terry's caliber to take care of our trucks when they make a doodie. I may retract this after I get the bill...:evil

and that is why I am posting now, prior to the invoice, while I am still thinking clearly and my mind is not clouded by how many 61" DLP TVs I could have bought instead of fixing the truck. However, I have never seen anyone at a light straddling a TV, waiting for the light to turn green so he can dust off another poor unsuspecting infidel in a lesser vehicle. I digress.

Anyway. Looking forward to getting the truck back so I can break it in nice and easy before I have my way with it at Kennedale. Definitely the 1/8 mile first. I'm thinking this is going to be fun. :nana2

Seems the magic tire changing fairy loosened the rear wheels (slicks) at the TFC and one of them decided to exit the vehicle during a drive around. Ruined Terry's Saturday, but no harm no foul and I will be picking the truck up on Thursday probably in Richardson. Anyone up for lunch at Bonedaddy's on Thursday?

Wow, that is pretty amazing that it didn't tear up the fender on the way off, other damage, probably dragged on the Metco lower and saved the diff and rear disk?
I would love to do lunch, but probably not possible.

I am now a lug nut/tire freak:eek: . I picked GoRila up at the track with the slicks on. So I left them on as it is the only way to hook up a built motor to pavement for data logging and tuning. I never touched them or checked them other than visual. All the lugs were on and appeared tight. Who ever loosened them only did so by half a turn or less. So on my warm up lap on the new motor it held on about 5 miles. Then on a left hand turn there were two shakes and there went the tire bouncing past me. It went in front of the truck and into a field with a fence thankfully. It was very NASCAR'ish. I pulled over and stopped and was prepared to step out and see splintered fender. I guess the combo of the left sweeper and the smooth SOFT slick made for a perfect exit. Other than a scuff on the bottom of the rear dust shield there was no permanent damage. I appreciate D'villes finest for running blocker while I got the tire back on. I borrowed 2 lugs from the right side to limp back to the shop. All of the right side lugs were loose as well. Some were 3-4 threads out at this time. So someone busted all ten loose at the track before we loaded the truck. I am very thankful I was going slow and nobody was around. I check all tire pressures and lugs before driving a customers vehicle now:tex . Rollin' Till the wheels fall off:evil .

Same type of thing happened to me years ago in my Mustang. Must've been someone in the pits who didn't like a street car on radials w/ AC blowing the doors off their back-halved race car.

I was two miles from home at 1AM when the driver's side rear tire passed me as I exited off Spring Creek Pkwy in N. Plano. It was a strange sensation as the car took several seconds before falling down onto the rear axle housing. I looked everwhere for the wheel/tire, and never found it... even in the daylight the following morning. Fortunately, there was no traffic and it didn't hit anyone/anything as it was doing ~50mph when it came off.

It ended up slightly bending the axle shaft and ruined the rear sway bar. Other than that no damage...except my ego as the teeny-boppers at the Whataburger there had a good laugh at my expense.

Glad you and the truck are ok.
