I have been freezing my pale arse off in the shop these last few months. I finally called Gary over at Wolverton to find me a furnace to replace the broken dinosaur. He found me a huge 140K BTU new in the scratch and dent section. I spent Saturday night and Sunday tearing the old one out and installing the new one. By the time I get it running we'll have nice 68 degree sunny days. Thanks for the hookup Gary:bows .

Thats nice but you'd need more than that up here.. my 30k unit in the garage is running 24/7 and cant keep up.. the garage is normally 50 degrees but right now its 40... maybe its the single digit weather outside with wind chills in the negative teens:rolleyes:

30K is weak, I wouldn't put that in a closet:D . I use a jet heater as a poor man's heater except it takes 16 bucks a day in fuels. I say fuels because it is designed for kerosene which is nearing $7 a gallon at HomoDepot. So I run diesel which is about $2.30 a gallon right now. When it gets too cold for the diesel to ignite I mix gasoline in it. I call it the hot stuff it is 4 gals diesel and 1.5 gals 87 octane. I think it yields another 10K out of the 60KBTU heater. But it does bring on some horrible headaches and tracers. I think it is fueling my paranoia:tex

Geesh, beat a man while his heater is working overtime to keep his 1000 sq ft garage a bit warm.. :hammer: It was the largest vent free unit I could find to hook up to the natural gas line.. this is the first time its been hammered. It usually is fine.. I had thought about one of those jet/bullet heaters for out there but decided I didnt want the hassle of refueling all the time. But I do bet the fumes are good:banana:

Oh, I know I know.. actually I should have done vented the first go round when the house was being built:o .. I have to run the dehumidifier in there all the time when the heater is running.. but I just didnt have the money to do it when we were building and wanted to go this route.. it was cheap, really cheap to do this way.

You should insulate the garage as well. That alone would conserve a great deal of heat.
That said, I'm going to take the old house ac/heater unit (3 tons), and put it in the shop space I'm building, but I'm not planning on running it full-time, just to knock the temps up or down as needed.

It is fully insulated and so are the garage doors.. you have to up here, well, not everyone does.. two of the walls are foam and the other two fiberglass.. what is interesting is that the foam way outperforms the fiberglass..

NOt surprising at all, the key to preventing heat migration is to limit air movement; trapping pockets of air is the basis on which insulation works, but since foam is a plastic and plastic is not a good heat conductor, it has a better insulating value than fiberglass.
Is the foam the spray-on kind, or is it foam "boards"?
I looked into the spray-on foam, but it was just way too expensive. They have do-it-yourself "kits", but the rig rental alone is nearly $1k for a day. :eek2: All told, it ends up over 3 times the cost of regular fiberglass. :(

The builder uses the spray in type.. it saves him money because you dont have to do house wrap and the labor is cheaper since the foam is easier to install and faster.. they spray it in and then come back and grind off the excess.. the nice part is that it makes for a really tight house and really knocks down all the outside noise..

 The problem isn't the availability of cheap labor; the problem is stubborn mulletheaded good ol' boys who couldn't think their way outside a box with a head start and a road map, who refuse to grasp the fact that something might be superior to something else, even if it's "different"; so we get screwed because they refuse to adopt the new tech. :(

We looked into the "dyi" setup: it was almost $1000 per day to rent the equipment, and $3500 for the material that would cover the walls only of about 2 rooms. :eek2:
I may do it to the workshop later on down the road, when the prices come down. :(

yes prior to that my AC couldn't keep up in the summer - I had already manually replaced a bunch of hem that had split - I fixed the worst of them.
It wasnt cheap BUT it wasnt as expensive as Tex suggests
AC works great now - of course in the years since the AC failed - and was replaced by Plano A/C

Who'd you get to do that, and how much did you pay? Because I'm not kidding here: these prices are accurate (well, rounded, but still), and I can't find anyone that will do it cheaper, they ALL say it's not cheap, or even comparable to, "traditional" insulation.

yah, those are two of 'em I called for estimates, and they were not cheap.
Something else, my builder brought up: foaming wall cavities can make it impossible to access said cavities for repair of pipes and/or wiring embedded in the foam. :(

In my store it was a place to hang out. It looked like a bus started in the hood, went by the trailer park, swung into the rehab facility and dropped off about 300 people and told them to go entertain themselves in the store for a few hours. They were clearly not shopping. While I was in line I saw 3 different people leave without all their bags, which means to me they weren't interested in what was in them.
ironically I should have asked a few of them where they get the 5 foot long tshirts they are wearing because Im always looking for Tall sizes :rll::rll::rll::rll::rll:

I agree...I want to move somewhere with about 5 acres and neighbors that know better than to cross the property line for fear that "the crazy man" is gonna get them :)
I don't go to Walmart much, just for a few items when needed. The one in Mansfield is still nice compared to most I've been in. I only go in/out through the garden section tho....a lot less "people" contact I've found.

You would need to double up on what you saw before Katrina.......trust me...there goes the neighborhood would be an understatement. The government set up darned near every apartment complex around here as section eight to accommodate the overflow. It was easy transporting them here. The problem is in how the hell to get them out. As long as the freebies keep on rolling in, they won't be going anywhere. Hell, even if the freebies are cut off, they won't go away now. They will just start stealing what they want.
That place was a cesspool of welfare and corruption. We are talking about three and four generation welfare families. Working was not a way of life for them before Katrina....and it sure as hell isn't going to become a way of life for them now.
