I was just wondering what gas you guys are running in your truck. I am having slight detonation with Exxon and Chevron 93 oct gas. Its really weird, it was over 80 yesterday and I was having slight det on my cold weather tune at 10deg timing...? Is the gas going to chit or is just me.

i feel ya, mines doing the same thing, ive used shell, exxon, and valero, and get the same results with all three and mine only has 11 degrees timing

+1
I use different kinds valero, shell, exxon, rac trac, and all same results, I'm thinking of stocking up with barrels of 116 octane and running nothing but 116 from now on

I haven't noticed any detonation with mine so far with 15 degrees timing. I have been running shell v-power in mine.

I haven't gone WOT on mine since changing the plugs, still need to do a few minor things, but I'm sure we will see how my truck is running when we data log it on the streets and on the dyno, I just called RPM so we are good to go dyno there :tu:
I'm taking the 8#er as well so if they have 116 to sell up there I wouldn't mind seeing what my race tune is set at, I want to see what hp/trq numbers 21#'s of boost produces
Hopefully with these new tunes coming from JJ it will solve my detonation problems

I was having detonation and took the tuner to Terry. Problem fixed, until a copuple days ago I noticed a little but not all the time like it was and not at WOT. All gas is going to chit like you said Tony.

has anyone tried just adding octane booster to their gas? something like 105 or whatever that stuff is called?

i run Alberstons or Kroger gas .. there is always a line at kroger so the gas is fresh and its cheap
I run a mild tune and have had no issues ..

At what boost and A/F?

I agree with this fresh theory, no issues with Walmart gas.

At what boost and A/F?
14.5 psi 11.6 a/f.
3.375" Whipple upper 4# lower.

I have 3 or more years of data and 2 trucks to base my opinions on...
BUT as was stated Im running 4# of boost with LTHeaders and I run an intentionally MILD tune ... Performance research at its best ... knana

I agree with this fresh theory, no issues with Walmart gas. Makes sense to me. I will fill up with walmart or albertsons gas tomorrow.

Another vote here! Find the station/s that sell the most fuel and get in line there!
I usually use QuikTrip. They're a top tier gas station, like Shell. I used Shell for the past 12 years. Got tired of their crappy local store running out of V Power.

I only use 93 from Quiktrips. Also I use the same pump everytime, so If I get a bad tank of gas. I know were it came from. I ran was seeing 15 psi on my old truck with 93 and was fine.

If we assume that straight ethanol is over 100 octane and up to 10% of the fuel we purchase @ the pump can be ethanol. Is the problem in the math when figuring octane?
If the formula is a static 10% for ethanol and the batch contains less would this adversely affect the octane rating. Would it not be lower if the formula is an average to determine the number?
Maybe resulting in detonation for some
just a thought please flame accordingly:tex

It takes twice as much alcohol to burn the correct mixture. So when you blend with alcohol and keep a gasonline 12.0 mixture you are lean and pingy. Alcohol stioch is about 5:1 vs gasoline 14.7:1 so when you mix alcohol you need to richen the mixture accordingly.

Great point. What then would be the proper AF when considering the Ethanol in the equation?
I would not put it past the oil companies to have included some type of funny math when agreeing to include ethanol. The devil is in the details

If we assume that straight ethanol is over 100 octane and up to 10% of the fuel we purchase @ the pump can be ethanol. I was watching a show called future cars about alternative fuels, and they say that 100% ethanol has a octane rating of 114.

That's if it hasn't absorbed alot of water. :(
That said, what about methanol? Does it have the same affinity for water? And what does it take to turn ethanol into methanol?
Another question: when I went to Ohmsby's little hooters GTG, he gave me a ride in his truck (OMFGWTFBBQ WHAT A RUSH!), and he said he could feel it pinging thru the gas pedal; and i don't think I've ever been able to hear my motor detonating. I know waht a NA motor sounds like when it does it, so is there an audible sound, or can it be felt in the foot (I've never felt that in mine, either)??
There was somthing else, but I fergit what. :(

Just as an aside,
I had to retune my twin-turbo Z06 due to the 10% ethanol gas. It wasn't a big deal... just added some fuel to it (as Terry said, it takes more fuel to reach the same power level). So maybe this is the issue with some of the L tunes.
I'm running my cold tune that Terry programmed and haven't had any issues, but I find myself only needing to use 1/2-3/4 throttle even when needing to accelerate quickly. :tu: Therefore, I'm not doing a lot of WOT blasts. But when I have, I haven't had any detonation issues (at least not audible).

I think maybe it was fuel related because we have not had it since. (filled
up at some shitty little station earlier that day):hammer:
I am just going to buy gas at the QT @ 380 and 288 from now on it is full up on cars 24/7 and always has a gas truck out front
I agree with Wes a little more fuel in the mix probably would not hurt just to be safe

Thanks for all the replies guys. I am going to get Terry to install my KB and some other bolt on's in Mar, so I will get new tunes all together :d . I'm sure the man will fix me up :D .
