It starts out like most horror stories. It was a dark and stormy night. It had just started raining the the residential area i was driving in. I made a right turn, on the freshly slicked road and put my foot into the throttle a little early. I went sideways one direction, sideways the other direction, and then straightened out right into a parked mazda. Damage is $6,800. I have to pay $1000 of it. I've been somewhat depressed ever since. I bought the truck the Thursday before. So I only had 3 days of fun with the lightning before f'ing it up.

Sorry, but unfortunately this very typical of new guys with L's in the rain.
At least you didn't total it and didn't get hurt I presume.

I agree, I was on my way home from work with my first L and is had rained that day. Changed lanes on the hwy and rolled it twice going 65. I had my truck about five months by that point, but still new to the truck.

Not only am I new to the lightning, but rear wheel drive with no weight in the rear end, and that much horsepower, is a big step up from the 95hp, 175lb of torque, Volkswagen Golf TDI that I was driving. I'm now driving the volkswagen again. I suppose it's a good thing i hadn't sold it yet.

Casey- that sucks- I glad the only thing hurt is your pride. If you still have the VW Golf use it for rainy days and put the L up. I have a beater just for this purpose.

My rule of thumb is 50-55 mph is the top speed for a Lightning on wet pavement if you have good tires, otherwise slower. It's very unstable in inclement weather especially making turns and changing lanes.
It's a tough lesson to learn. Glad you weren't hurt. Good luck with the repairs.

Like Dirty Harry said "A man's got to know his limitations" Limitations (http://www.moviesoundscentral.com/sounds/dirty_harry/limitations.wav) :D
I always wondered who actually hit parked cars.. At least it is a square hit, easier to fix. One of the guys on here had a buddy at Texan Ford fix his for only 3500 and it was worse than that.

Those wheels can be fixed. I had one fixed after I hit a brick in the road and it bent my rim back like that. Could not tell it had been damaged.

I feel ya man, I remember last year during one of the FireWater meets that I went to, it was pouring outside, and even taking it slow n easy, I almost spun the truck out on NW Hwy, (not doing nething stupid, just was too wet and tires were bald) luckily I've driven RWD cars most of my life and i saved it. Hope ya get it fixed fast so I can see what everyone says is a beautiful truck when I get back to Dallas next month!

well as long as i don't wreck it between the 20th (when they said it will be done) and the next get together, you'll have an opportunity. Nothing real special about it. It's just lowered and the dude i bought it from gave me a nice set of Boyd's he had sitting in his garage. looks nice, but no real performance. 370 hp 431lbs. of torque.

Been there, done that....... except mine was on dry pavement with bald drag radials and the other car was moving. Live and learn.
Good luck with the repairs.

I disagree, with new Nitto DR's I usually go about 65-75 mph and have no problem keeping it straight in the rain. But I also have a JLP supercooler in the bed, as well as a heavy Snug Lid

I'm with you, I have no problem with those speeds on 555 extremes, tho my tonneau cover helps some.
This incident makes the case for one of these:

Just a little update on the tragedy...
I went over to the repair shop today because I was having trouble getting a hold of the dude in charge of my truck over the phone. He tells me they have been unable to start work on my truck because they are still waiting for the insurance to give them the go ahead again. It turns out i tweaked the frame a little bit soooo... @$%^!!! I was hearing good news all day, until this crap. My buddies from Minnesota are coming in town tomorrow night, going to coachella next week in L.A., closing on a house soon... and then *^%$!!! Screwed out of my truck. They say that if the insurance doesn't total it, it will still take a month to fix. I wish shooting sprees were legal.

Casey,
The end of one of my frame rails was slightly bent and I heard the same story from both the body shop and the insurance company. I had already convinced myself that if they decided to total it, I would buy the truck back from Allstate for pennies on the dollar and pay to have it fixed out of my own pocket. There was no way I was going to allow my truck to go to a salvage yard. The damage wasn't that bad!
Through my insurance agent, I discovered that most insurance companies will spend up to 75% of the trade-in value of a vehicle. I figured mine was worth at least $20K, and I knew there was no way it had more than $15K worth of damage.
They ended up fixing it and the final bill was around $5,200. No problems with the front end whatsoever. The truck tracks straight, no rattles or squeaks, and the tires show no signs of excessive or uneven wear after more than 10K miles.
Again, good luck with the repairs. I hope it works out for you.
