View Full Version : How many miles per tank are you getting?

Ok... my job consists of me driving from Bedford to Plano. Thats about 40 miles each way. Its all on george bush. I've been driving 70mph the whole way here, there is no stopping or anything. Should I really be getting about 280 miles to a tank!? My truck is ALL stock with an airbox. This doesn't exactly seem right to me. :vomit:

im lucky to get 200 to a tank around town:bs , but in a stock truck you should be getting 300 to a tank if you driving it around and stay out of the boost

Once i get on the highway, i have been setting the cruise at 65 and going... it seems to be a little better at 2000rpms.

Sounds pretty good actually. When I drove my truck to work every day I was filling up about every 4-5 days and work is about 25 miles from home. That equtes out to about 200-250 miles per tank...

You have a blown 5K lb V8 truck what do you expect? Ford v8's have always gotten poor mileage. You don't buy a Lightning for fuel economy. 13-15 is the best a 01-up gets. I was lucky to break 9.5 mpg with mine. You bought the wrong vehicle for fuel economy. My 8K lb 4wd diesel gets 16-17 in the city.

two key things here..

1) if you are drivng 70, your mileage will suck. I have only measured the mileage once and got almost 20 per gallon.. but it wasnt at 70 mph
2) it had better be on the highway and not stop and go... for the obvious reasons

I must live a charmed life. My last tank was 373 miles, 24.7 gallons on the fillup (and i typically top off slightly), for 15.1 mpg :eek2: Before this one, I was getting around 13mpg consistently, so I see from 280 to 310 miles per tank (tho I typically start sweating when it's over 300 miles). I can't quite figure out why it got so good this time around, especially since I do NOT baby it at all.

Also, I thought our tanks were 24.0 gallons.

Thats what i get. This is why you can get a L. cheap now.Hell it cost a fortune in gas to drive one as a daily driver. You can get a gas saver but why pay extra/insurance for a gas saver and make truck payments for somethimg thats just gona sit in the garage.Fords always get shitty gas milage.I think fuel needs to be regulated, theres a **** load of gouging going on out there.I would like to see someone come up with a fuel hedge card, where you buy X amount of gas with a few companys and pay the hedged price regardless of the bullshit excuses of what drives up fuel for the stupidest reasons. The fact is they have us by the nuts and you cant do a damn thing but pay.:bs

I think I have seen my mileage drop because of them adding in the alky to our gas.. when it was 100% gasoline, I got better mileage.. (see other thread on E85)

as has been noted many times, this is noth right vehicle if you care to get more than 10mpg on a regular basis, I know there are exceptions, driving habits etc but overall it seems 11-12 is an average # I've seen/read about in the last few years.

I don't worry about miles per gallon, I keep track of smiles per gallon :evil:evil:burnout:

Wes, I couldnt agree more.. perfect post.. I cant tell you how many people ask me about my gas mileage.. I tell them I dont know because you dont own one of these for the gas mileage.. I do tell them that you can drive them to where you can watch the gas needle move.. :evil I have only checked the mileage once.. and most likely wont do it again.. whats the point? it is what it is.. I just enjoy driving it too much.

I averaged 10-12 mpg around the city when mine was stock. Howard was driving one time on one of our race trips and got damn near 400 miles on a tank. He about made me crazy driving it right the hell on the speed limit at 65 mph for that run. We made a trip back from Florida one time and my average MPH for the entire trip was 95. I was floor boarding the damn thing for 1 to 2 hours at a time out on 10. My milage dropped to about 7 MPG on that trip. Howard did most of that trip with his eyes closed...LOL. He said he didn't want to see it if he was about to die.

I agree with the guys that say the average seems to be around 10-12. They sure aren't made for good milage.

My F250 diesel is getting 15.5 around town...but I have a tendency to romp it alot. On the highway I can squeeze around 17-18 if I set the cruise at 75.

Thats 60 bucks a fill up, X 15 days (every other day) = 900 a month in gas!!!!!

Sorry Tex - Ill believe a printed flyer before your "I think my owner's manual says 26 gallons. I have run it out a couple times (:stupid:), and got at least 26.5 in there."

Dont want to confuse this with details like facts but one of the things that the NGS would do is give gas level in % I ran it down to ~5% once and that fill up and every other fill up was less than 24 gallons

Edit - I know that Tex will say that the Ford Marketing hacks just print whatever they want in the manual .. But here is the page from mine...
I cant say Im surprised that in Tex's dimension 26.5 gallons fits in a 25 gallon tank .. :evil:nono:

That's cool... you found it, I didn't. Of course, yours *is* a 2003, things may have changed between 2001 and 2003, I dunno without finding my book myself.

Here's my last fillup, and I wasn't anywhere near running out of fuel, tho the light had been on since about 1/8th of a tank:

http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/1717/pict0001ik7.jpg

Say or think what you want, I know I can squeeze in 27 gallons when it's dry; take into account they want some space for vapor/air, and 26 is a believable number.

That was my first thought too.. Tex, I bet the gas station you are going to is hosing everyone with altered meter in the pump.. of course you could trust that the state or fed measurement and weight folks are in your court and watch all of this closely.. or just maybe by this little alteration, more gallons get shown being pumped and then more tax revenue to the govt... hmmmm

I considered that, too; and if that's the case, then ALL pumps are off. I've been able to do this from day one, and done it at more than just the local pumps, all the way to HOuston, Alice, Corpus, Houma Louisiana, Amarillo, Tyler... the list goes on. The first time I got 27 into the tank, I had run out of gas in Plano and coasted into a Chevron station; the next time it happened, was on the Tollway at Frankford and I barely made it to a Texaco there (both happened back in 2002).

Like I said, they like the tanks to have an air space; maybe I'm violating it.

Just watched "how its made " building gas tanks .. They are designed to only fill to 80% to allow for heat expansion
