View Full Version : Why would one C.O.P. keep going out?

Before I swapped the engine I had one cop that would intermittently not fire.

Now I have had the same one fail twice. Any ideas? Just a note of interest, the one that failed today was a cheap POS from crapy-zone. (only one they had)

Thanks

Just from my experience, my stock '02 L's #1 and #2 coil packs went out at the same time in late '03.

Both were replaced and the L runs tip-top to this day.

Who knows why ...

I guess it really is a crap shoot. We have four E250 service vans with the 5.4 motors. They have the same coil packs as the Lightnings. One of the vans has had all the coil packs replaced. One has had maybe 2 or three replaced. The other two have had none replaced. All the vans have 125-150K miles on them now.

We count the Autozone brand coil life in days/hours. Borg Warner or Motorcraft only. Check the wiring, make sure the terminals are tight at the conector not backing out or gapped, change the plug.

The Borg Warner is holding up :tu: No more codes. So much for the cheap COP's.. I would have never bought it.... But it was the only one they had.

Charlie

On a side note. On the OBDII scanner.... it's not # 5..... it's E ... Weird!

Some one please tell me the plug going to the COP. does not go straight to the computer.

I put an OHM meter on it and it would read no resistance. So just for shits and giggles I put the meter on Capacitance. The rest read .6 to .7 Micro farad. # 5 read .001 micro farad.

I got to do some digging to find out what is wrong.

If the comp is bad.... And I have to by a new one. Can my SCT be unlocked so I can use it one the new one?

If the comp is bad, then all you have to do is reload the stock tune back on the old one and the XCAL is ready to be used on the new comp.

Thanks Bird ... Thats what I was thinking. I found a wiring diagram for the COP's . For any one wondering. # 5 cop comes from pin 27 to the cop the to the radio noise capacitor...... Now all I have is find it. (The broken wire I'm hoping for)

Only SCT can unlock. If you show the ma receipt for PCM they may waive the 150 unlock fee. They started charging to curb the eBay resales.

No worries It was not the Comp. I jumped the wire going into the harness. No more codes! :icon_mrgreen:

Crap! I still have to fix it right.... Damn I'm a wet rag today.

Now, that's interesting.....................I've switched PCMs and after loading the stock tune back onto the original, I used Liveload to unlock the XCAL-2 and then loaded the tune onto the new PCM with no problems - did it in reverse back to the original PCM also.

Once you use up the 5 unlocks though, you have to send it back to SCT to get it cleared.

You stated that you returned it to stock first, yes anyone can reset that. I meant if your PCM crashed and you could not put it back to stock. Then SCT is the only ones that can unlock it.

Well it's doing it again. So apparently that was not it. Back to the drawing board!:flaming:
