Looks like a GM hood. For a thousand bucks before paint! I would buy long tube headers or other mod that actually makes power. The engine has a blower you ain't ramming nothing in it. Ram air is for N/A engines and has been proven to only work over 150mph at that.

That's the same hood I have on my truck. The real benefit is that it provides a true ambient air induction system and heat extraction vents (optional).

We did some wind and aerodynamics research on the Lightning front end many years ago and discovered that in order to pick up any air at all at speeds above 40 MPH, the inlet scoops needed to be either at a height of four inches above the plane of the hood or within eight inches of the leading edge.

High pressure builds at the front of the truck and low pressure builds at the windshield cowl. At speeds above 40, the airflow will not be caught by a hood scoop placed too far back on the hood.

The Suncoast hood may be pricey, but the build quality is excellent. My paint and body guy said it's the best aftermarket hood he'd ever seen. Very little prep work to make it ready and fitment was dead on, with only two shims needed on the driver's side.

The GM ram air hood only looks good on the TA IMO. I have seen them on trucks, muscle cars, rice burners and I just dont like the look. Def like the cobra, cervinis cowl, or the custom cowl I saw made from a stocker. Hell I dont like the hood I have, I bought it thinking it would grow on me, but nope. Each to their own tho. Like Terry said unless your pushin major power, low ETs, or doing supra rolls, hoods are for looks not much function.

The real surface area of those two little openings and dinky little flat panel filter are a joke esp with the grilles blocking 60% of the openings. The engine eats 5 times that much air at WOT. I bet a Whipple could suck the hood closed if you sealed it up good enough:rolleyes:. No telling how it affects the air making that harsh turn into the MAF.

I had that hood on my L. (Picture in Gallery) I had a much larger opening under the hood though. I used the Air-raid box and 12" filter. I paid a lot less than $800+ for mine with paint!!

yea ur lookin at well over a thousand dollars for that hood, not worth it... i just bought the cervinis 3in cowl hood for 500 and had it painted at clark bros for 300, its cheaper and i think it looks sweet...

I think you'd be surprised at how much air actually gets past the grilles. I sure find a lot of bugs and other debris trapped in that "dinky little flat panel filter", so the inlet openings definitely aren't an issue.

Simple logic would suggest that by providing an extra source of ambient air to the airbox would be better than heated air drawn through an open element CAI. Not to mention the air from the hood is being forced into the box and not relying on draw through the fenderwell. Air through the factory panel filter has to make that sharp turn to the MAF, too.

While I will agree that there are better performance mods to be had for the money, I would be remiss if I did not add that I've picked up 1 MPH on my 1/4 mile trap speeds (from 105 to 106) after the hood was installed. :D

After I installed my hood my 1/8 times dropped a 10th consistantly. Whatever the reason, be it cold air, luck, or aerodynamics (ha, ha), it was okay by me. I chose that hood for looks, but it had to be functional. And I had not seen another one on an L before..

John,
I chose the Suncoast hood for the same reasons. The only other one I've ever seen was on a black Lightning at an Austin SVT show I went to a couple of years ago. It looked good on the black truck too. :icon_wink:
