View Full Version : Shooting on Dallas highway last night!

On channel 4 some dude crashed on 35 last night and the driver popped out with a shotgun and started shooting people. They were stopping to help him and kept shooting good samaritans checking on the accident. I think they said a civilian returned fire on the bad guy. Nobody hit the bad guy, he eventually shot himself. Weird, you never know when you need to be ready to stop someone...

Also on the news a guy walked into a Missouri church this morning with 3 guns and killed some people. Jeff obviously wasn't attending that church:evil. You need to be prepared for tactical urban rifle deployment. Or be ready to drop a TURD on someone as I like to call it.:D
Yo Steve o, where do I come up with this stuff:tex

Thats crazy you brought up this subject Terry..... My fiancee was in dallas last with some friends. They went to the club and then headed home. When they got to the friends apartment to go into the gate, two girls approached the vehicle and put a gun to my fiancees head. They got away with all their purses.
Dallas is a F***ed place, now days. But I guess it could happen anywhere you go.

There are to many stupid and crazy people out there. Thats why I always carry my 40cal. or 9mm in between the the seats when I'm in the truck or on my jacket when driving the motorcycle. And always on me any where I go. Its good to have a CHL.

Either get your CHL or wait until September 1 before you do.

Some changes to Penal Code 46.02 (Unlawfully Carrying Weapons). The short of it is even without a CHL, as long as the handgun is not in open view, and as long as you're not enagaged in any criminal activity other than a traffic offense, then it will be legal to carry a handgun in a vehicle you own or operate.

Interesting. How does the new law work if a person is on a Motorcycle? I am thinking that if a person doesn't have a concealed carry permit and they are carrying the weapon with a shoulder holster(or on their person), the minute they start walking away from the Bike, they are now breaking the law. I guess they could stash it in a bag on the bike, but then the gun is at high risk of being stolen when they leave the bike in the parking lot.
The open view part of this law seems a bit wrong also. It seems like it would make more sense to require the hand gun be in plain sight in case a law enforcement officer is pulling you over. Actually...now that I think about it, what the hell are traffic cops going to do now??? Everytime they pull some ding dong over for a traffic offense, they have to assume the perp has a loaded gun in the car. This could get real stupid before it is over with.

No...each State has the right to make and enforce their own gun laws. I wouldn't try this trick in Illinois...for example...LOL.

im sure you will be required to inform the officer immediately upon his aproach that you do have a concealed weapon in the car, just as you have to do with a CHL

That's not my point. My point is that in the past, the officer could assume the average joe isn't going to be packing a gun in the car. Now, the officer has to assume that the average joe is packing heat. It's a mental issue when pulling a person over. It will (IMHO) increase the stress level of the traffic officer when making a traffic stop. It's the difference in the officer being willing to play the odds and approach the vehicle....or will the officer now feel the odds are greater that the average joe is carrying a weapon and tell you to get your ass out of the car and step around to the back of the vehicle before he/she approaches you? Are you/we going to feel violated if an offecer makes us get out of the car in a pouring rain, because now the officer has to "expect" a loaded weapon is in the vehicle. That's what you would be doing if I where a cop and it is legal for every smoe to carry a pistol between the seats.
I would be real curious to hear what Moonshine thinks about it.

Cops always presume that there's a weapon in a vehicle. The bad guys have always carried. With CHL some of the good guys carried, too. Now more good guys will. Won't be a big deal for the cops.

I say this law is BS if you don't have a record, owe child support, or taxes the state bascially hands out CHL's if your too lazy to get one or you have something to hide in your background check you don't need a loaded weapon in your car anyway. Its not that hard to get a CHL.

How about this for a thought process? :tex
Anyone here ever know anybody that made the statement.."boy, that guy was lucky I didn't have a gun"? The reason the person making this statement, didn't have a gun, could be that the person didn't want to break the law and carry a gun illegally. Alot of the time a person saying this, would not have been justified in using the gun in the situation they said they wished they had a gun. Now....the same person has the gun. Is it OK to start blasting away at someone on the street because they piss you off. I am wondering(maybe even believing) that more folks will make bad decisions if the gun is right there at hand. the CHL holder has had to at least sit through a class where they where told of the right situations to use a gun.
A case in point. Last week my daughter was driving to work. Some coward decided to road rage on her. She got very scared. She called who she new was closer to where she was driving. He started heading toward where she was driving and was right behind her within a few minutes. The coward had already turned off and headed another direction. Now this guy is going to get a strong talking to:evil as soon as we find him(we are stalking his route to work...LOL). But what if she had of been carrying a gun? She was panicked! She starts shooting at this threat! Oh sh!t!!! He is now a member of the DMFC. Does he deserve to die for road raging? Not really. He needs to be learned a bit...which I will do when I find him...but death??? That senario plays out all over the metroplex every day with folks. Now that same woman may just make the bad decision to start shooting her gun out the window. Hope to hell I don't get hit as an innocent by stander.
Remember now, I am basing some of this on the belief that not everyone needs to be carrying a loaded weapon. Not everyone is going to behave in a rational manor in a defensive situation.

Actually with a CHL you don't have to tell them anything. Although if it's your car they already know by the registration if you have a CHL.
I usually hand them my CHL with my drivers license if I am carrying, some appreciate it, others act like you've offended them.
I've had some ask me if I had my weapon with me when stopped with someone else driving.

I keep my hands in plain sight and let them ask the questions. There are not many good ways to tell the cop you have a gun for an opening line. If you are carrying you MUST show CHL when asked for ID, if not packing then you don't have to show your card. I hand them both at the same time then they ask if I have it with me. I say of course not guns are dangerous! It is at home unloaded in the safe with the trigger lock on it..:D I usually just use my Jedi powers of mind trick on them and go on about my day.

I thought you had to show them your CHL if you are carring or not? I thought if you just gave them your DL and they went and ran it and it came back that you have a CHL you would loose it for 6Months. O well I just hand them DL CHL and Insurance just to be safe.

Nope. Terry quoted the law correctly. If you are carrying you must present both DL and CHL when ID is requested. If you are not carrying you are not required to present your CHL. They're supposed to stress that in your CHL class. :hammer:

That is weird cause when I took the class the instructor said to give both DL and CHL weither your carring or not....when they run your DL's they will know you havw a CHL and then wander why you didn't show them....does this make any sense:confused:

my instructor said to only show your chl when carrying, but to show it if he does ask since it comes up when they run your plates, but to say you dont have a weapon on you

I will have to check on this in PA.. you can get a CHL by going to the courthouse, paying $36 (I think) and signing a few forms.. the wife and I are going to have to look into this one.. we ordered her gun a few weeks ago and when it gets here, we are going to take a self defense with handgun type of course.. put on my an ex Marine.
gotta love that in a wife.. right?

I totally disagree. Texas has one of the MOST EXPENSIVE CHL's in the country, if not the most expensive. $140 +postage to the state + whatever the class, prints and photos cost. It could be a $300 license by the time it's in hand. A lot of good, honest folks cannot pay for that. To stereotype any law abiding citizen as "too lazy" to get their CHL is very short sighted. :nono:

My guess is the instructor was trying to keep it as simple as possible so folks would remember. Nothing wrong with showing both anytime ID is requested. However the cop finds out (DL return, License plate return, or by you presenting CHL) they're going to ask if you're carrying.

Brian,
Any idea how this change in TX CHL law will affect the legal boundaries of states that have CHL reciprocity agreements in place?
Too, any idea how this affects CHL holders from neighboring states traveling in TX?

There is no change to the CHL law. The changes are to Unlawful Carrying Weapons, and it has no impact on CHL law or reciprocity.
