Ok, I have been wondering this, but I have been unable to find any information so I will pose it here and see what the great minds (or otherwise) of the board can give me.

Through college I drove a convertible Mustang and after college I bought the L and my dad has been driving the mustang since. He has recently made mention that he would soon like to get another car so I was thinking that instead of him trading it in for peanuts, I would see if I could take it back from him. I say all this to ask this. I have always thought it would be cool to either remove the doors, or modify them to be easily removable. Is this in any way legal? Could I actually drive on the street with no doors? I see jeeps doing it all the time so there is some precedence for it, but I keep thinking that may have something to do with the fact that they come from the factory like that.

Just a question.

The car would fold in half you would need to weld subframe connectors on plus some probably. I am sure you could do it.

I have no doubt that there would need to be some structural reinforcement. And that is not a problem. I was mainly trying to see if anyone had any info on if it was even legal. Would a law enforcement officer see fit to pull me over and impound my vehicle if he deemed it unsafe for the road?

Sounds like a Moonshine question.

But I will say, even if legal, you are practically begging to be pulled over. Just because it is legal does not mean all cops will know that.

A jeep sits higher and has a frame to help keep other cars off your lap. A low stang would not protect you at all even if you reinforced the body. If you decided to do something like this, you should consider making a roll cage with side bars to protect you while reinforcing the car. Even so, you might have trouble passing state inspection and avoiding the local cops....

I don't think it would be legal. All street legal cars are required to have a minimum amount of side impact protection. The jeep gets it from a tall reinforced lip at the bottom of the door. You would have to find some way of adding that protection at about the average bumper height. I sure wouldn't want to be riding in it if it got T-Boned.:eek2:

Screw the law! It is your god given right as a redneck to modify your Mustang however you see fit:beer:

I can't think of any law it would violate. Manufacturers have to comply with federal safety side impact yada yada, but not individual owners. I do think it'd be dangerous as h*ll, even if you added some sort of sub-frame and roll cage.

On the bright side, if you did it and got squished you'd probably get a nomination for a Darwin award. :icon_rolleyes:
