For the past few months or so my truck has had a ticking noise that I quickly managed to isolate down to the #7 and #8 area on the top side of the motor.
First thing I assume is that a plug is working loose. I do have an 03 head on the drivers side but you never know. I checked all the plugs but they were all tight.
So now I'm thinking this may be an exhaust leak (it sounds like an exhaust leak), I did remove that header last year to install sensor ports for the EGT. I checked the torque on the flange bolts and didn't see or hear any signs of exhaust coming out around the flange.
Thinking it may be internal like a valve, or a lifter or something I was at wits end trying to figure this out.
SteveO comes by yesterday and I'm letting him listen. After about 2 minutes of looking around he's says "where's your hose to your EGR sensor?" I'm like WTF, there is a hose missing. How would this hose just fall off? It was the rearward hose that goes to the DPFE sensor(the little square box above the valve cover).
If any of you guys have ever had to disconnect this hose you know that you have to wrestle it to get it off without breaking it and mine is just missing.
Long story short, I went to the garage, cut a piece of hose and now no more noise.
Once I got to thinking about it, I realized that I have never removed this particular hose for any of the things I've done to this truck. I may have disconnected the one side but have never completely removed it. I've also had a little bit of an idle issue from right around the same time that I've noticed the noise. It started at LFest last year! I guess that'll teach me to leave my hood up and my truck unattended.
This post is just a little warning to you guys about watching your trucks...This could have also be a joke by someone last year but I would think the person would put the hose on the dash or seat or something so they could have their laugh when they see me find it. More realistically I guess someone just needed a piece of vacuum hose really bad.
