Hey guys, I just moved here and finally went to go get my safety inspection; however, I have now failed for the second time. My truck is in perfect condition but the computer fails it at the end of the diagnostic test. The first time the guys said it was because I hadn't driven the truck since the battery was put back in it. The second time.... What the hell is wrong? I am thinking I should take the predator tune off of it right now, but what else could it be? The guy told me to drive the truck around alittle and come back after the first test, he said that it just had no miles logged into the computer since the battery was taken out of the truck, but I did this then took it back this morining and it failed again. Is there a certain # of driving cycles I need to complete or what? WTF???

I had a similar problem - y ou need to complete "most " of a ODB drive cycle - NOT all "most"
If they will let you test again in 2 weeks I would just drive it and drive it ...
Mine finally passed - If you get a ticket for no inspection in the interim its easy to get reduced since you are trying to get it resolved
Depending on your mods and who programmed it you might consider
putting the tune back to stock

They should give you a printout telling you what's wrong. If you're hydrocarbons are high you might be running lean (fuel filter, seafoam in the tank), if you are running rich clean your air filter/adjust the tune (drive it easy if you have mods). If that doesn't work, go to a shop in the crappy part of town (theres plenty of crappy parts) and tip someone to pass you lol!

Bring that baby up to Montague County and get it inspected. No sniffer here. 12.50 total price. It about 70 miles north of DFW.

the Gen 2 doesn't go through the sniffer test, they plug the cable into the OBDII port under the dash

Isn't the law for N.Tx something like...... "If the vehicle is registered in these counties...Tarrant, Johnson, Denton, Wise, Dallas,& Collins...it has to meet the air quality smog tests for those counties"...... which is different than the tests out in the boonies?

That's what I've always understood

I think it has to be tested in the county it is registered in. definately has to meet the emissions test. You notice they raised the prices for inspections this year? like 50 cents for vehicles but 2-4 bucks for trailers and rec vehicles, motorcycles...

Yes you have to get your state inspection in the county its regisered in.
You are failing because the monitors are not reset. When you disconnect the battery the pcm "forgets" the tests it ran and you have to let it retest which is sometimes difficult. When they hook the state machine to the truck it not only checks for stored codes but checks to see if the pcm says it has checked the main emission systems. They do this to keep people from just blowing the codes out to pass a state. When you clear the codes with a scanner or disconnect the battery it losses the test memory and will also set a code p100 or p1000 or something like that to show that the pcm hasnt checked the systems. Now the problem is some cars ...Fords and Volvos for example can be a bitch to get the pcm to retest all the systems. On many cars the pcm will not check the evap system if the fuel tank is below 1/4 tank or above 3/4 tank. Also it will not check the egr system unless the engine is warmed up and you are at a steady speed on the highway with your foot off the brake for a certain number of miles. etc. etc. If you look around ford has bulletins out on exactly how to do a " drive cycle" to get it to relearn. Or get a buddy with a scanner and keep driving it till it relearns. ( a scanner will tell you if it has reset ) also most decent inspection places should be able to check it without doing a state to see if it has reset.
Hope this helps :)

When I was having problems with my truck throwing codes and needed to get it inspected, right before the test I cleared the codes, ran the inspection test, passed, and codes came up as I was pulling out of the inspection shop

You can do that on a pre OBDII car but it doesnt work on 95 up because they dont use the dyno they just hook to the OBD port and it will show that the OBD monitors have been reset and will fail

guess my 2004 Lightning is pre 95
No dyno was used, I cleared the codes, he drove it around the block to do the brake test, brought it back and had codes, used the SCT XCAL2 to clear the codes, plugged the inspection machine into the OBDII port, 2004 Lightning passed, and pulled out of the inspection shop and codes came on, but it NEVER failed when it was tested

if it keeps failing the obdII plug test you can opt to have it put on the dyno and a sniffer test done. Alot of places wont tell you that cause they dont want to strap it to the dyno..
Friends t/a wouldnt pass for months it had a bunch of soft codes for the egr or something so we went next door to the quick lube and put it on the dyno and put the sniffers on and passed with heads, cam, gutted cats, longtubes, wild cam. (we didnt have the dyno at the dealership)
also yes to be legal you have to get it inspected in the county the vehicle is registered in.

Okay, I have driven the truck now for over a week, yet the P1000 code still exist! Could this have something to do with the 160* thermostat? Should I put back in the 170* or maybe evn the stock stat? Will this help to clear the code? Thanks!
hotrodsbygeorge

yes its possible the t-stat may cause a problem the pcm may not test systems like the egr unless the temp is high enough. The best would be to use a scanner and see what is not reset yet and try to do a drive cycle just for that part. Also to the fact of clearing the codes to get it to pass OBDII ..I guess it is possible to get lucky and have it reset the monitors and not set a code until after the test but I think it would be hard to count on. The best thing is if the truck doesnt set codes and all that is wrong is the monitors arent reset is get them to reset and get a legit sticker.
<---- also was an inspector
Truth be known if you wanted to cheat and get a sticker you dont have to run it on the dyno. There is a way ( I'm not sure exactly how to do it)
You can tell the state machine that you cant find the obd port or that is
not in good working order and then tell it everything is working good on the car and it will pass it. I remember this from state insp. school but I cant tell you how exactly to do it ( my memory kinda sucks )

For years I had a Ford NGS STAR tester - same as the dealers use - I had same issues - couldnt get P1000 to clear - I tried following the instructions in the link - didnt do squat - I drove around with the scanner hooked up like a fool for days - in some cases its impossible to get the truck "ready" to start the test - ended up - disconnecting the scanner and just driving my normal stuff for about 2 weeks and it cleared
sold the scanner

The 02 and newer PCM's raised the minimum coolant temps for readiness but they would set a code if it was too low. I would just drive it. It wants to see WOT, cruise with the A/C on etc.. A good mix of driving. You should also be able to scan and see which test is not ready yet. That will help you narrow it down.

I didnt mean to imply to follow the link exactly . I meant for him to use it to see what the pcm was looking for to reset a specific monitor and maybe it would help hurry up the process. We had a Volvo once the guy had to drive for about a month and a half before it reset all the monitors. Then again a Lexus will reset in about 5 miles.
