What type file is it. Some sony's record in mpg format and some have to be converted over. Either way, see what type of file it is and let us know. If it is a different file format, a small codec off the internet might even solve the problem.

If you have a fire wire connection on your camera and on your puter, just plug em together. Windows movie maker (free) will tell you what to do from there. If you don't have windows movie maker...which you should, it came with my puter, go to Microsoft and download it...did I mention it's free?:D

:tu: :tu:True true, use this and it works great and is user friendly for people not familiar with video editing. If it's not on your menus, which it is not when default XP settings are applied. Just do a search for Window movie maker, it comes with all editions. Hope we have helped out.

unfortunately the BUP file is NOT what you want
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BUP
BUP (Back UP) is the filename extension (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filename_extension) of some files stored on video DVDs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD).
The BUP file (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File) is a backup of the IFO (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IFO) file on a DVD, which contains the information about the organization of tracks, menus, chapters, subtitles on the disc. The BUP files are used in the event that the corresponding IFO file is unreadable, perhaps due to a scratch on the surface of the disc.

Yes the disc cameras can be tricky if not tech savy on how to transfer them the easy way. Try to do what doug was saying about showing all files and maybe this option will work for you. Make sure your computer is displaying all files, even the hidden ones. It is under Tools, Folder Options, and then click on the "VIEW" tab. There is an option in there to show hidden files, and also a selection to unhide system protected files. Make sure both of those are chosen so that you are able to look at ALL the files. After that, with some luck, maybe you can spot the video file out of all the files that are on the disc. Try showing thumbnails as well to see if the video file appears out of any of them, if your not sure of the formats that the camera outputs in.
Hope this helps. :stupidc

Put the Toyota cd into your computer. Open up Windows Movie Maker. Click on file. Scroll down to "IMPORT INTO COLLECTIONS". Click that. Then a window will open up that will allow you to go to the CD, which should be in your "D" drive. You should see the video there. Select it and and click import. It will do some funky sh!t and you will then be able to save it out of Windows movie maker. It will now be a WMV file.

That sucks. Weird deal for sure. It sure seems like if it could be played, it could be recorded. It isn't copyright protected is it. I noticed my DVD recorder gives me an option to protect the disk...I always choose no. Maybe your bud chose yes...:tex.

the disk has a 400+ mb vob file which is the DVD video file
Movie maker wont read that - Im not sure his PC has DVD drive
A VOB file (Video Object) is a container format (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Container_format_%28digital%29) contained in DVD-Video (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD-Video) media. It contains the actual Video (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video), Audio (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound), Subtitle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subtitle_%28captioning%29) (VobSubs (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=VobSubs&action=edit)) and Menu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menu) contents in stream form.
VOB files are encoded very much like standard MPEG-2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG-2) files. If the extension is changed from .vob to .mpg or .mpeg, the file is still readable and continues to hold all information, although most MPEG-2-capable players don't support subtitle tracks.
try that
copy it to your PC and then change the extension
