I was wondering if anyone knows if its mandatory to give employees a paid vacation i would say one week ive work there for 5 years:icon_question:

BUT as tough as it is to find decent employees the smart companies do

well im going to ask for a vacation and if they say no i will ask for a transfer to another store maybe that will change there mind thanks for the info Doug.:tu:

Yeah you need to negotiate
After 5 years you have skills to offer
Make them work for you
2 weeks paid would be standard

Your right i have never taken a vacation the five years i have work there and two weeks would be grate.:tu:

Ive been at my job for nearly 10 years and I would be embarrassed to say how much vacation I get - A hint would be that I signed up for 3 weeks straight this summer - only took 13 days though not 15

Part of the vacation deal is affected by skill level of your job. Some of the big company retail chains get around giving vacation time by making it a rule that you have to be full time(40 hours) to qualify. Then they keep you working just under 40 hours a week.
Five years in the HVAC business...for technicians anyway...would be 3 weeks. The way I do it is 2 weeks after one year...3 weeks after 5 years...then one day for every year after that. Doug for instance...would be at 3 weeks if he worked for me. He probably is getting more than that where he works, but I am a medium sized business and can only afford so much. When I worked out at DFW airport...many years ago...union job. I was getting three weeks at five years and one week for every year after five, up to a max of 10 weeks a year. I still don't know how the company I worked for could afford that...but I enjoyed it while it lasted.

Pretty much all an employer is required to do is pay you minimum wage. Anything over minimum wage is a blessing from above.

The other day, my dispatcher/customer service rep/daughter said the man was keeping her down. Thinking she was talking about big government, I agreed with her and mentioned that the man was keeping us all down. She looked dead in my eyes and said, "What the hell are you talking about? You are the man". I had to laugh. Later that day I got bothered by it and ask her if she really meant that. I was hoping she would say she was only kidding. She wouldn't take it back. So I told her I would fire her if she didn't apologize:cool:.
Edit: your right. You would have 4 weeks coming. I haven't had to cross that road yet. I'll come up with something...LOL.

Not at work she isn't...:tu:. The reason I can't fire her is that if I do, my days of going to the office whenever I want, will be over:eek:. Between her and my production manager, they keep the place running like it's suppose to. I only have to give direction. Then I step back and watch them get the job done.

I get about 6 weeks but sell back 2 weeks of it every year... can hardly get away for the 4 weeks.. but its nice to have out there.

When you get back to work go to your HR person and find out what other benefits you might be getting and don't know about. Hell, you never know what you might be missing out on.

No i won't get greedy im not the type that likes to take lots of time off i wont ask for another vacation for another year but it is nice to have some down time but i will keep in mind not to get greedy and your method souds good also.:tu:

Well i work for On the Border Mexican grill and cantina i am a cordinador and my job is to help short handed stores in the cooking department and i present new food idems before they come out. The main store im mainly at is the one on bryn irvin road but i go to burleson,weatherford,fossil creek,south Arlington, and the new store in Grand praire when ever they need help.

Wow..that is a big chain type place. I bet they have an employee handbook that spells out benefits and what not. You should ask somebody for a copy of it. Who knows, after all the time you have been there, they may owe you some missed vacation time. My guys can carry over unused vacation time from one year to the next. Many companies do the same or even buy the time back as Dana said. You may have a good chunk of change coming to you. Be cautious in your approach though, you don't want to freak them out by getting too smart to quick. Just kind of sneak up on the topic.

Yeah, I would definitely look into back owed vacation time. Like he said, it is a big chain and I am sure they have a good handbook out there some where. At my job, for example, any vacation that I earn this year is good for two years after the year ends. So anything I earned this year can be saved and either used up or sold back by December 31st, 2009.
Like Rocks says though, kinda take it slow and ease into the questioning, all of it might end up working out big time in your advantage, if done right.

yeah its pritty big its Brinker international also owns Chili's and some other restourants. A buddy of mine just came back from korea they opend one on the Border he is a new store opener and said he had a blast. The next stop for him is Egyp and then plano there is about 200 stores or so nation wide.

The first move is to get a copy of the employee handbook to read. If you start asking around about whether or not you have something coming to you, they may get cheese dick and fire you before you figure out they owe you money. Get a hand book and see if the hours you work per week match the criteria for vacation time and how much you should have received over the past few years. Then look up the rules on unused vacation. You may be SOL on unused vacation. Some companies have a use it or loose it policy. Remember, they don't have to give you anything. The labor laws are only going to cover you on stated policy, hours worked matching hours paid and minimum wage rules. Be careful on your aproach. You don't want some ass hat manager to think your about to cause trouble.
To sum it up for you...just ask for a copy of the employee handbook. You don't have to tell them it's so you can see if they have been forking you...;).
