My subscription to my anti-virus software is about to end. I have no idea what I should use to replace it. Is there even an option that doesn't make your computer come to a grinding halt like Norton or McAfee?

I have a consumer reports that rates Trend Micro at the top, but the ratings don't include a catagory on how much it bogs your computer down. So I don't know if I should trust these ratings or not.

I just don't want to waste money on something that's going to be worse than the Norton software that I had before.

Also would like a recommendation on antispyware...

trend is good. ca's etrust r8 is also good. both of these have spyware/antivirus all-in-one products available. there is also AVG (free)

you need a dualquadcoreamdopteronintel to not get bogged down while you're being infected :tex

This is what I use for antivirus.

http://usa.kaspersky.com/products_services/anti-virus.php

It's usually at the top of the ratings and they update virus definitions every hour. It doesn't seem to bog down my computer either. It was a touch more complex to setup than some of the other antivirus softwares I have used.

I used to hate McAfee with a passion, but now that I bought a new computer with Vista, it came with three years. It seems to work really well with Vista and have had no problems at all so far. My other computers still have XP on them. I use norton on all 3 of them and have never had a problem at all.

I use some software called deep freeze, i love it. Basicly your computer hardrive is locked and anything that gets installed on it while your using it dissappears when you turn it off. Its a little more complicated than that but you get the idea. So if you get a virus or adware, just shut it down and reboot, problem solved!

Todays viruses are getting past the best scanners

The most important thing to do is to learn to NOT do risky things with your PC

use firefox not IE
dont open jokes or attachments
dont surf porn sites
dont click links in email

Of course for many of you you may as well just turn the damned thing off if you cant do those things

Other than the firefox thing I am careful about the other things. I might decide to start using it soon though.
I even have my explorer set to ask if cookies are allowed. That drives my wife crazy because it pops up on every website you open but I have her trained to say always block unless it's a trusted site and absolutely necessary.

I had bought Norton a couple of years ago when I had a trogan adware attached to my machine. Norton couldn't find it, after trying several free downloads Adaware finally found it but couldn't delete it. I could delete it but it would keep coming back with a different name each time. It took me about 10 hours of messing with system files and internet explorer settings to finally get it all manually taken care of. It was a major pain in rear. So that was when I promised myself that I would always keep a good virus scanner on my machine.

I'm seriouly considering this one. It seems to have some really positive reviews.

I just don't know whether it is better to buy a suite of software from the same company for the anti-adware and anti-spyware or if I should use separate programs.

The kitchen sink applications like Norton 360 are famous for slowing down the fastest computers
And they also are responsible for stuff just randomly not working with no alerts

Its a trade off are you willing to put up with the performance hit 24x7 for the perceived protection ?

I havent updated this in a while but here is a collection of HUGE problems norton/symantec has had recently

What Doug says is true.. I have the McAfee Security Center.. and its asking me to update it every few hours, then it brings things to a screeching halt when its updating.. etc etc etc...

Those free downloads you are speaking of are 9 times out of 10 adware, spyware, or malware themselves. Like doug said Use Firefox and don't surf things you shouldn't be an you won't have a problem.

I use mcafee enterprise edition but when installing it I put minimum protection so I don't have all that so called security center that makes you think your safe.
