You see the Russians are harassing us with their bombers again...

I saw that: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23117045/
One of the Tu-95s buzzed the Nimitz at approx. 2K ft. TWICE yesterday with another loitering a little over 50 miles away. The Tu-95 strategic bomber is their equivalent of our B-52: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tupolev_Tu-95

Check out Putin's remarks: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/02/11/world/main3819788.shtml
"The U.S. has defended the plan as necessary to protect its European allies from possible attacks by Iran. But the Kremlin has condemned the proposal, saying it would threaten Russia's security.
"We are being forced to take retaliatory steps," said Russian President Vladimir Putin, who also warned that a new arms race is under way."
If this keeps up, I hope the US can produce and elect another Reagan in order to regulate on Putin if he keeps this nonsense up. http://www.ls2.com/forums/images/smilies/2gunsfiring_v1.gif

Nah, it looks like we'll elect another tax and spend Democrat who will just cut the military to bare bones... then we'll be behind the Russians, all after building up their democracy for the last 15 years. <sigh>

Do you really think that Obama or Clinton could be President of the US?
Think how other countries would perceive or receive either one of them.
I would like to see Romney join McCain as a running mate.
But I digress,
2000 ft is unbelievably close to a US carrier with a Russian Bomber.
That is ~10 wingspans.

Yes, I think the American people are stupid enough to elect one of those two Dems. Other countries (especially terrorists) will just be licking their chops...and that would be the time to start building a military to rival ours b/c ours will go backwards if either are elected.
And I agree... that is too close for a Russian bomber to be to a US carrier. I am honestly surprised we didn't have a couple of airborne fighters fire a shot near the bomber.
My brother-in-law has served on 4 six-month "cruises", at least one of which was on the Nimitz as an F-14 and F-18 fighter pilot. I wonder what his take is on this issue. Right now he's on US soil.

I don't know why we didn't take them out. I guess the way it worked out someone showed good control and judgment. There could be a nuclear attack come from that kind of action. Maybe our guys saw their bomb doors were closed or they were not on a direct path over our assets. Maybe we have lost our nerve..

I don't think that we have lost our nerve, just controlled it. This was a very common thing during the cold war & no-one ever fired a shot. Had anyone ever pulled the trigger, we would be living in a different world... If we were living at all. I've seen military videos from the cold war of one thier naval ships playing chicken with one of ours & neither turned in time. They wound up drifting sideways into each other & trading a lot of paint. A flyover is pretty small compared to some of the crap that has happened in the past. They are just pushing our buttons. Unfortunately, it is a very dangerous game. This Putin guy is very scary. Doesn't take much research to find that he is pushing to bring back the old Russia & he has already won over a large portion of the Russion youth. The younger generation is the future & that makes what he is doing very scary.
With us already tangled up in the Middle East, the last thing we need is the re-emergence of the old Russia. One thing is for sure though... My job will be secure.
