I am thinking about all the personal trips and vacations I can't afford this year due to fuel. It looks like one of those scooters isn't such a bad idea now. Last year fuel in the mountains was over 4.50 a gallon and that stung a little. Why doesn't our govt pull its head out and do something!

McCain has said he would waive the fed taxes on it and also stop filling the feds backup storage units to drop some of the pressure on demand.. but the real issue is that speculation is driving a lot of this and if we can get more out of the Iraqui oil fields and at a lower price, it would help.

After 3 years of flying im thinking of going back to driving the 3000 round trip again this year ... Flying is too much of a pain - Airlines can get into your pocket for 800 in a heartbeat - thats a lot of gas
approx 3500 miles rt / 26 mpg highway * 3.60 a gallon is approx $470 - a cheap ass ticket is about $325 - so add in the cost of 2 nights in hotel on the way and you are at about $600 - BUT I can completely control when I leave and I have a car when I get there ..
After my trip to hawaii with any change to any ticket costing min $200 to over $500 and the pain the the but that flying has become ... Im on the fence - I may just drive ...

Delta just announced that checking a second bag will now cost you $25 or if you have an oversized bag (more than 50lbs) it's a $150 charge. This is in addition to the higher fairs and processing fees.

$150 for bag over $50 ? WOW - I thought $25 was a lot
more reasons to drive -
Fill the trunk - no worries

I agree.. even at $4 a gallon, its still not a bad deal..the only thing about long trips via car is the time lost and what value does that have to you.
I have to fly due to work but also take the long car trip hence the new CTS.. dang too, it already has 10k miles on it and I bought it in early Nov..
But am flying to Hawaii in Sept again..

Its a half a day on each end - i used to think that it was a day and a half BUT these days IF everything goes perfect a flight thru ORD takes ALL day so its a 21-22 hour drive which means if I dont stop to see the sights Im there at 1pm on the second day. So I lose the LATE evening of the day I would have flown and the next morning - BUT I enjoy driving - and I get a day to clear my mind. AND I can work most of the time behind the wheel - cant do that on a plane ...

We're driving to Orlando and Hot Springs this summer for those very same reasons, but it is kind of hard to drive to Trinidad, so we will have to fly that one.

I got ya.. I just had to book roundtrip to Houston from up here for 4 hours worth of meetings.. almost had to fly in day before and leave day after.. it was close but can get it done on Southworst. I really dont like to fly them AT ALL.. unless I wanted to stay another night, that was all there was..
but you are right, if you have to make a connection, then all bets are off and you might as well drive. If I can fly non-stop, then its a whole nother matter. When I was flying regularly out of DFW on AA, I could almost fly anywhere non-stop and it was Good..

This will date me, but here goes, while I dont like the expensive gas anymore than anyone here, I do remember the days when you could not buy gas because there was no supply.
You had odd or even days that meant the last letter on your license plate if you could get gas, and when I was in high school in the 1970's you had stations flat out of gas, and let me assure you that is a whole lot scarier than 4.00 gas now. When you needle is on E and you cant buy any then you start to freak out a bit.
Not sure why we dont put the MARINES IN BASRA AND SIPHON ALL THE OIL FROM THAT GAWD FORSAKEN IRAQ UNTIL WE GET GAS BACK TO 1.00!!:tu:

I was a senior in college during those days.. when a gas station in Houston tried to sell gas for $1.00 a gallon, someone went by and shot out the front window of the store.. the price went down after that..
But Congress is now going to make Iraq start paying back the monies that we (the USA) have spent on them.. so I am guessing that they will want to really ramp up production.. now as long as terrorists dont mess that up, it should start to prove interesting.

I thought this was a rather interesting article on the subject:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24410809/
Airlines slow down flights to save on fuel
JetBlue adds 2 minutes to each flight, saves $13.6 million a year in jet fuel
NEW YORK - Drivers have long known that slowing down on the highway means getting more miles to the gallon. Now airlines are trying it, too — adding a few minutes to flights to save millions on fuel.
Southwest Airlines started flying slower about two months ago, and projects it will save $42 million in fuel this year by extending each flight by one to three minutes.
On one Northwest Airlines flight from Paris to Minneapolis earlier this week alone, flying slower saved 162 gallons of fuel, saving the airline $535. It added eight minutes to the flight, extending it to eight hours, 58 minutes.
...
Not every airline is taking the slowdown approach.
"We have the flying schedule to protect," said John Hotard, a spokesman for American Airlines. He said the carrier does other things to save fuel — for instance, installing small vertical stabilizers called winglets to the ends of some aircraft wings, which boosts fuel efficiency by improving aerodynamics.
American also tries to keep its planes plugged in to ground-based power and air conditioning for as long as possible to conserve fuel, and pushes air traffic controllers to assign its flights to altitudes where they will have less headwind or greater tailwind. Many other airlines have adopted similar measures.
