This guy does some good driving to keep it from slapping the wall. While he stayed in it too long to get himself in this situation. He does a good job to keep driving and keep it off the wall.

I love the end quote... "the true purpose of Joe's car lies on the street." I'm sorry... it won't hook up any better on the street. It will get wrapped around a pole or through another car or two in a few thousand miles, I'm sure.

I bet he wasn't doing 75-80 when the car started doing all that. I also think he got lucky big time. The car was driving him, not vice-versa.

Anyway, if you can't drive the car hard, what good is all the power, except to take the car to shows and put the dyno sheet on the window for bragging rights. 0-100 he would get killed by cars making 1/2 that power.

I think he shoulda threw it in R and went backwards through the traps!!

I think they meant rolling start and highway romping. That is usually where the high horsepower cars shine. The 650-1200hp cars (Supras, 427TT C5's, Vipers etc..) I can think of were all badass at the street races down GB190. They would do 60-100 roll ons up to 200mph. The hooked up and got it quite well on that tarmac. I think that is what they meant anyway...

I'm sure you are right, Terry. I would just think that 1100+hp would still light the tires (not haze them, but spin them hard and uncontrollably) at 120+mph.

That's cool and all, but doesn't win many/any races and is dangerous in even a capable driver's hands.

I'll race the guy to 150 in my car. :icon_wink: Oh wait... no I won't. He'd total my car and kill both of us way before we got to 150.

Don't be hatin' on all the others Wes. The GT has an aerodynamic/down force advantage over the C5, plus the mid engine has more weight over wider stickier tires than the C5. Now if you had a 427tt it would be another story maybe. I am disappointed at the c5's aero, yep they cut through the air but they are not stable at speed. I almost flew mine at 200mph and it was a real floater over 165. There are plenty of folks rolling around with serious HP and they aren't cutting cars in half as you suggest.:tu:

Not hatin at all, Terry. At least that's not the word I'd use. ;)

To be honest, I did expect the GT to hold the road better (certainly far better than my C5... I agree with your assessment of it, BTW), but after seeing it do that (maybe the driver wasn't the best, I don't know), I just cannot see how 1100 hp is going to mean jack on a highway.

It also takes a capable driver... many (not all) of these folks are not remotely capable. I don't think the owner of that particular car is even driving his own car! But I guess he's going to go tear it up on the highways of FL at 2am.

Maybe at 180mph or so, 1100hp will still hook. I'm too old for all that, even if I had a car that would accelerate to 230, so its a moot point for me personally.

With age though, I know all about the "law of diminishing returns" and there is a limit to what a street car can hook up effectively and with some measure of safety. I seriously doubt the GT (or any of the others mentioned) is better at sticking to the ground than a NASCAR prepped racecar, and those don't have 1100hp.

I am with you, there is a limit to what you can use 90% of the time. And it is prolly in the 5-600hp range. I live for that 10% though:D. Isn't it Saleen that says wretched excess is good.. Turbos are so smooth these days and cars so capable they can mislead you right over the edge:evil.

I am a fan of downforce and aero. It makes driving a whole new game. F1 is a great example, they can turn and brake 3 times harder than wingless cars. The factory C5R made enough downforce at speed to drive on the ceiling of a tunnel if such was possible.

C6 updates.

I can hardly explain what it feels like to drive with downforce on the street. It is like you are magnetized and the earth is ferrous metal. You can just about abuse the throttle, steering and brakes without upsetting the car. As ugly as some of the components can be they sure do work great. The little Spekter Werks pieces we put on our C5 zo6 made it much more stable at speed.

I've never been fast enough for any real length of time to appreciate (or probably need) a vehicle with a ton of downforce.

Trust me, if I could find a Ford GT or Saleen S7 in the used classifieds for a song, I'd buy one. :)

One of my customers is selling his 05 Ford GT red with white stripes. $140K about 3,500 miles.
