View Full Version : Anyone know what is involved with purchasing a vehicle from Canada?

There's a vehicle I am mildly interested just north of the US border.

However, I am not going to waste time/$$ jumping through logistical hoops and govt red tape if that's what it takes. I'd need to have the vehicle shipped to me from there... I'm certainly not driving it back.

I assume the money exchange would be relatively pain-free, but if anyone has any experience (or knows where to find info) on purchasing a large item/vehicle from Canada, please point me in the right direction.

Thx.

I believe NAFTA affords you some trade ease. I had a relative who bought a car from Quebec and had a dealer do the transfer to circumvent some of the BS

What are you eyeballing.... ihave been traveling so much the Z0 has been setting in the barn:hammer:

Importing a vehicle not originally intended for the US market is rife with regulation. If the car does not have a DOT certification, you may as well forget it.

Even if the same model is for sale here, make sure the SPECIFIC one you are looking at is certified. An example would be the European Ford Focus - even though we have te Focus here, theirs doesnt carry the same DOT certification.

Here are some useful links:

Customs and importing:
http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/trade/basic_trade/importing_car.xml

Safety/DOT rules:
http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import/

And if it's something diesel or exotic, you might need to make sure it will pass DFW smog.

Hope this helps.
