Can any of you guys identify this snake? This thing crawled into a weep hole of my house while I was trying to catch it. It doesn't look like the pics I see online for texas snakes, The closest looking picture I found was a western diamond back rattlesnake. This thing was shaking its tail like crazy once I got it agitated.

Definitely similar markings. The thing I'm not liking is that is head is proportionally very wide for his body. The pics of that bull snake all have narrow heads.

Looks like a rat snake. I have them on my property. I just shoot them. They aren't poisonous but they do bite and can be pretty agressive. If you put some moth crystals/balls in that weep hole it will drive it out. Be careful if you have a dog or cat though, cause moth crystals are poisonous.

I could see that he was staying just inside the weep hole waiting until it would be safe. I tried to wait him out but got impatient and sprayed some wasp killer.

I generally like to let the snakes live around the house, but if they are poisoness or inside the house I usually kill them. I have had quite a few rat snakes around but I wasn't sure this guy was one of them because he looked a little different than the last couple I had.

The wasp killer should take care of him in a little while.

If he shook the tail and you didn't hear anything... it wasnt a rattler (unless someone cut off the rattles which DOES happen, but I doubt thats the case here unless you pissed someone off). Looks like a bull snake to me tho... They are well known for shaking their tail like a rattler when agitated. Their head is usally heavily patterned (their body marking go from tail to head; most piosonous snakes stop at their head including the rattler). Tails are long and pointed, rattlers are fat and covered in buttons. Finally they have a trianglular head. I'd def say you have a harmless, bullsnake. They are great hunters... eating mice and other snakes.

:0fftopicThis guy said he got a cat to kill rodents and snakes around the deer
camp. I don't think that worked out too well for him or his cat!

That definitely isn't a rattle-snake. Just look at it's tail, Jason. I'll have to go with the others and say that's a rat or bull snake.

Here's a 50" diamond-back in the drive-way recently - evidently an older one b/c the rattles are almost gone.

A 41" was taken recently around the same area as I think it was a younger snake as it's rattles were 3.5"+ long. I'll try to take pics soon with a ruler next to them.

Here's the wikipedia site on Western diamond-backs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crotalus_atrox

You don't want to tangle with one of these. :icon_eek:

I agree after seeing that pic, it looks like a rat snake same markings just less brown in color. The pattern on the head is almost identical to the pic above.

The rattle snakes seem to be proportionaly shorter and thicker than the rat snakes.
