What a fluke deal...
A 50 cal round came down through the roof of a motor home and shattered a ladies arm. The slug looked unscathed... I wonder where it came from. I bet they can track it. Not everyone is out there blasting 50cals...:icon_eek:

There's a range very close to TMS called quail creek range. http://quailcreekrange.com/

I can think of someone real close to there that has a .50 cal:D
I have a desert eagle .50 cal for a sale at the pawn shop if anyone is looking for one.

Did the news say if it was a .50 BMG or .50 AE? Big difference between the two rounds. I'm guessing .50 BMG given the injury.:icon_sad:
I hope the lady is alright given the situation.

Looked like a .50 BMG from the news clip. Coulda' come from several miles away.

The guy owned up to the round. The shot came from 5 miles away. They are supposed to accept his apology and forgive him. There goes our 50 cal rights.:icon_rolleyes:

What? Was it an accident, or was he firing into the air? Certainly he wasn't trying to hit someone, but if it was a stupid act that lead to someone getting hurt unintentionally, that's still incredibly irresponsible and should be dealt with accordingly.

The guy is supposedly a competition shooter and was target practicing and over shot a target.
To me the round was coming down at a sharp angle and was not deformed by ricochet. It was obviously cranked off at a decent incline or off the end of a cliff.

Yep... I think he was being a dumbass playing the "I wonder if" game. I'm all about guns, but shit like that pisses me off. No wonder "city folk" are antigun. I'm interested to see how this plays out....

Exactly what I was thinking, which makes it _not_ an accident for it to come down at that angle.
It's irresponsible owners who inadvertently help pass liberal legislation that will infringe on our 2nd Amendment rights.

The bullet doesn't look deformed, but beyond that, for any of us to suggest that we know what he was doing is highly speculative. How about we wait and see what the investigation determines before passing judgment either way?

I read an article that said he turned himself in and said he was shooting at targets in front of a berm - That could have simply over penetrated the berm

My friend says the end of the range faces away from TMS. So it would have to be a ricochet...

I don;t think a 180 degree ricochet would fly 5 miles. I don't think the round could hit anything and go 5 miles. It penetrated the trailer in a clean round hole. A tumbling/ricochet round would not make it a mile.;)

I think the guy purposefully or by mistake fired one off in the air.

It wasn't distorted or out of shape, a ricochet would have tumbled like hell and don't think it would have went 5 miles.....:nono:

Is there a link to the news article. I'm having a hard time following the angle deal from 5 miles away- didn't think there that much elevation out that way unless he was firing upward??

Did a little playing around with my ballistic software, and even at a 30 degree elevation (generally considered the optimum elevation for maximum total flight distance) I can't get a .50 BMG 750 gr. A-Max to show a maximum range beyond 4.34 miles at any sort of reasonable velocity. Maybe he was shooting a bullet with a better ballistic coeffieicent, maybe he was shooting at considerably higher velocity than I calculated (2800 fps), maybe it wasn't his bullet. Time will tell. I would tentatively agree that it's exceedingly unlikely that the bullet richocheted or struck any kind of intermedite barrier and still remained aloft for that distance. But bullets can do some really weird and unexpected things.
