We bought mom a little Ruger Sp101 type 38. It is stainless, double action, and has a small grip. She loves it and shoots it well.

You can get a Taurus model 85 UltraLite for about $300 new. It will shoot .38 +P. You can also get the Titanium model for about 100 more.
I don't think that I would ever buy a Taurus semi, but their revolvers are great and inexpensive.
If you don't like Taurus, the S&W Airweight is about $400.

The 357's kick hard but the 38's are real smooth. It is only five shot capacity but stainless is a maintenance free finish.

You can fire a .38 Spec. round from a .357 Mag. revolver and you are fine.
You just can't do the opposite as the .357 cartridge is longer.
Yes, I voted for McCain / Palin and straight REP tkts.:icon_cool:

A revolver is a MUCH better choice for a new or non practicing shooter.

I don't know why but the 9mm also kicks harder than the 38... The 38 is SMOOTH. I think we loaded mom with Gold Dot 38+p for defense. She did not like the kick of the 9mm Glock and wanted to cross her thumbs behind the slide.
