Uh, no I don't think so. More like $40/yr. At least that's what I've been paying since '94 for WA 2 FST plates.

It seems I looked recently and the cost went up drastically.
edit - I just searched again and found the $40/yr plates. I think this is what I found last time I looked and it was in line with what Doug said http://www.myplates.com/

The company that made them for TX went bankrupt. They said no custom plates for a while... It was 40 bucks extra when I had mine. Texas is 6 charaters and they said no spaces about two years ago.. My plates of choice were 6SIX6:evil

When I got mine at the beginning of '07, it was 6 letters or numbers and two spaces, or one space and one special character(such as a hyphen). Also 40 dollars extra a year, on top of registration. Just sent off my renewal paperwork at the end of november.

I bought 2 cars in the last year - looked a number of times at the Txdot and myplates.com site which was the ONLY source for custom plates for Texas
If you wanted ANY plate with 6 digits and weren't able to prepay for 10 years, it was $400 a year - you dont have to agree or believe me but that was the price - not surprised that the company went out of business - there were almost Zero plates that anyone would want that were the simple $40 over the regular fee ... The 4 digit plates were much cheaper and the 5 digit plates were in the middle
You can now order them direct from Texas again
http://rts.texasonline.state.tx.us/NASApp/txdotrts/SpecialPlateOrderServlet for $40
The other reason I didnt do a specialty plate was that I didnt want it any easier to remember and I couldnt come up with anything I was willing to explain over and over and over.

They never charged by the digit, it has been $40 bucks for personalized plates. Texas is still on a 6 character system. Arizona just adopted 7 digits because they broke 10 million cars registered.

“The price of plates will depend on the style and the level of personalization. Plates are divided into three series: Custom, Premium, and Luxury. Prices start at $95 a year, or from less than $40 a year if you buy a ten-year term.
It may be that prior to the myplates deal you could order regular plates from TXdot direct but after the deal they moved ALL custom plates to that site.
While the myplates was up - the regular link was NOT up
The only plates that offered 6 digits were the most expensive Luxury class
The My Plates personalized plates cost from $95–$795 depending on the license plate and renewal term chosen. The My Plates personalized- plate cost does not include vehicle registration and fees, which are paid separately through county tax offices.
if you look here you will see other users that saw the carzy prices like I did

I guess I have been lucky then. I have had personalized plates on the Bullitt for 6 years and on the Lightning for 4 years and have always paid $40.

The issue hasnt been renewing a plate its getting a new one - its a moot point - the company that used to own the process and charge $395 for a plate went ourt of business so you can order from TXdot again - Myplates was only in business for less than a year so what may have happened before or after is likley different - But when I looked for plates for the Vette a few months ago, $395 was the only option for 6 digits

In that case I'm glad that they are gone!

Yeah glad they are out of business then. No way I would have been willing to pay that much for something so simple. Poor business practice. :hammer:

It looks like Doug is up to speed. Another example where privatizing something costs the consumer more... My personal L plates were 6 character and cost me 40 extra a year period. Maybe they will go back to $40 extra again now, I wonder who will make them? Are none available now?

I didn't realize the personal plates don't transfer with the vehicle- they belong to the prior owner.
I found that out and had to wait for them to expire then reapply for '93BOLT' and hope it was still available.
Got lucky and was able to get it again- only cost me about $30 bucks prorated since I had to get temp plates in the meantime

Texas is currently 6 but will be 7 next year. Exempt plates are already 7 digits but they are making the 7 digit ones now and as soon as the 6s run out they'll be 7.
