I'm looking at registering a domain. It looks like you get the better deals if you register your domain with some hosting options. Anybody have any recommendations for a good host? I would prefer something that allowed asp.net, but it isn't a must. What else should I be looking for?

depends on what you are doing with it
ourinternet.us is a godaddy reseller Ive used for about 10 years
$9 a year to rent the domain name
if you dont mind Linux hosting you could get some space on this server ... send me a PM if you are interested - no .net

there is no such thing as unlimited
You dont have unlimited CPU, nor do you have unlimited SQL connections, nor FTP connections, FTP is throttled down - your site is one of thousands on a server - once your account starts to use resources you will see just what unlimited really means. Think it through, how can they afford to have staff answer the phone on a $10 a month account ? Answering one call wipes out the profit for 6 months

I ended up using NameCheap to register the domain. Still shopping for a windows web host.

You get unlimited site transfer, unlimited any domain parked, sub, and addon, unlimited storage space, and I was wrong only 200 data bases. Oh and I checked its actually 6.95 a month and your Domain is included in that price... but whatever I know nothing check out the features for yourself.

if all that were true then why would anyone get a VPS or a Dedicated server ?
Why would TALON be on a server that costs $400 a month ?
If unlimited everything is really $6.95 then why ?
I asked the question of Bluehost ...
if everything is unlimited then why would anyone need a VPS or dedicated server ?
responses :
Yes, but it is "shared" hosting, so you are sharing the server space. When we say unlimited we mean we don't have a pre-set limit on the space...only if you are causing problems for other users, then it can be an issue. Shared hosting is typically for those with small businesses.
Can only be 20 concurrent connections at a time, the only issue you should have is if 20 people try to post, on a blog for example, at the exact same time. It may time out which is unlikely but possible.
means, you are causing other peoples sites slowness due to your resource intense sight, or using up to much cpu causing others to time out. If you think you need a dedicated or vps host, then you'll want to search that out. Unfortunately, I don't have any set limit for you. It is a shared host, so you cant, of course, use up all the resources space cuz there are other people on the server with you.
What that means is that TALON as slow as it is here couldnt be run on bluehost - 20 concurrent SQL connections = about 6 users an hour depending on what the SQL timeouts are set for and you cant control that
Its neat how they refuse to tell you what the limits are - its all warm and fuzzy till you start "causing others to time out " How do you measure that ? You cant ? they just shut your site down and tell you to move on....

I'm pretty sure CCCC has some continuing education classes on those topics. For the most part, I just look up what I need to on those areas on the net.

Wow, Doug after talking to you yesterday. I come in this morning with ppl screaming the website is down the website is down. We have other smaller sites hosted on blue host but they are on different servers and they are up its just my main site that is down. We just posted 2 days ago a new job posting on our website and its been hit pretty vigerously the past few days. Do you think they shut down my site or the server crashed due to traffic and downloads.:mad::mad: Looks like I'm finding a new hosting service :tu:...

Whats the site name ?
Can you ping it ?
Can you still login to the bluehost control panel ?
Ask them for domains that are on the same box for testing
what does dnsstuff.com say about it ...
One thing to consider is a VPS or reseller account - one account for one money that lets you host multiple domains - add and remove them as you wish up to reasonable limits - PM me if you want help or are interested in moving a site to this server
Ive been through all kinds of smaller - unlimited type accounts in the past ( 6 -7 years ago ) EVERY ONE eventually caused problems
The history of SVTLightnings.com was discussed in Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords years ago - I told them that at one point the site was running in IIS on a pc in my bedroom - which worked fine till someone called and seid the site was down - it was up BUT since it was running in NT workstation at the time - it had a 10 connection limit - at 10 connections it just started rejecting people. That was when I began looking at moving it to places like YAhoo hosting and various other places, each ran me off as the site(s) became more popular - I got tired of some of the sites becuase the server load always was so high that I the sites were nearly unresponsive - because someone of the 1000's of other people on the site were using too much resources - after all that - I started using VPS's - virtual private servers - 1/4 or 1/6 slice of a server - that worked for a while and now I own one server and manage another - Its much better - the sites POP - its VERY secure and if I decide to register another name it costs me nothing

The site finally came up, I couldn't log in to the CP and couldn't upload anything and couldn't ping the IP. it said my IP was unresponsive that why if figured it was my server down, I tried to call them but could never get through(guess there were a bunch of ppl with sites down). With the upcoming changes that they want to the site I know we are going to have to find new hosting with a dedicated IP. So if you know any good ones with good prices let me know. Thanks
If you wanted to visit the site and give me some pointers it is www.workforcesolutionstexoma.com I know the Domain is fricken huge and the color purple is gey but I do what I'm told. lol

not sure why you need a dedicated IP but if you are interested I may be able to help
All the sites 40+ on my server share the same IP - Apache figures out the rest
VERY common arrangement - If for some reason you needed an IP you could get one but I cant think of a reason

If you look at the Child Care part of it, its about to go completely online and the only way to apply for it is through the website so we are going to have major hits on our sql database and they don't want it to bog down and kick ppl out so I figured I'd need a dedicated IP and as many sql connections as possible. Now like I said I'm very new to this kind of stuff I got a degree in computer Hardware I'm completely self taught when it comes to webdesign lol it probably shows. So if i'm wrong about any of this please correct me and if you have any suggestions please let them flow cuz I'm a little over my head here ahah. Thanks for all the help so far.
