i want to do the 4lb lower pulley swap but the only thing holding me back. is finding an experienced tuner on lightnings. im not gonna just trust any shop to tune my truck. dont want to blow my engine. can some of you guys tell me where you got your truck tuned.

4lb doesn't need a tune IMO

agreed.

But if you need a tune Terry is local and very capable. If he is not available have one of the other known tuners send you an SCT and some can tunes which will be safe for a 4 lb IMHO

Only guy I'd let tune my truck who is in the DFW area is Terry Cole. He's a well-known member here who has done countless of L tunes, from mild to wild combos and knows these trucks as well as any of the high-profile guys you read about in the rags.

There are a couple of decent mail-order shops I'd use, but no one else in the DFW area. The shops that tune Mustangs do _not_ always get it right with these trucks. Period.

Terry will give you a good tune, I have his tunes in my truck.
What plugs and what gaps?
Always run 93, detonation is the killer on these motors.

using the stock tune is very safe, the timing is very low considering what other guysrun with "dyno tunes" you can run for years on a 4# with stock tune and be safer than someone who has been re-tuned, only draw back is you wont see the full power of the 4#er

4lbs doesnt require a tune - in fact I would run no tune or run one from Terry or maybe one other tuner -

I would MUCH rather run stock than some tune from an idiot "tuner "

As was stated here there is only one local source for Tunes worth a damn - thats Terry

Seriously doubt it. This is the Bank 1 / Bank 2 system lean codes. Most likely you have a vac line disconnected somewhere or an air leak somewhere from the MAF to the TB or a PCV valve/hose that is off or out of place.

With that said...Stay out of the boost until you get that fixed. You can kill the motor fast if you're running lean.

Well sunday I got a #4 crank TR6's and a new PCV, and last thursday I got new magnaflows mufflers on and have felt a slight rattle in my truck at idle ever since. Which makes me think i might have a exhaust or header leak? Could that throw the codes?

WA 2 FST
02-18-2009, 12:19 AM
a leak at the header-to-head flange could definitely throw the code, but I doubt an exhaust leak downstream of the front O2s would cause this code.

I would make sure all the vacuum hoses are tight and seated properly, including the PCV hose.

I bet thats it then.

I do have bassani shortys that I have never tightend in the year I have owned the truck. Could the added amount of boost make the headers loosen more??

I checked the hoses and from what I could see they are on the barbs nice and tight. Hose to PCV is good and I know my mechanic checked them all sunday when he did the install.
Hes had 2 Gen2 L's in the past 7 years, just sold his 04'L for a 04'Cobra last week. Did all this work for me sunday for $100:icon_mrgreen:

I fought with these two codes for the better part of a year probably when I first bought my truck. The truck never ran bad or anything, just would get these codes from time to time. I chased down vaccum hoses, tune, all that crap. It ended up being that little hose on the top of the EGR had kinda melted a hole in it and was not that noticeable. Terry sealed it up one weekend when we were putting a fan and suspension on my truck and I haven't had issues since then.

What about a leak between the MAF and the intake? I was looking at my new LFP intake and noticed it had a 1-2mm gap between the MAF adapter and the MAF. I was thinking it wouldnt matter because the air hasnt passed a sensor at that point.... dunno. Im outside now trying to figure it out.

What yall think??

Maybe on the gap, disruptive air.

What changed, a new PCV, maybe the wrong one?

Here is the stock timing table. The PCM allows up to 19 degrees on stock tuning. Plus 01-up are half a point leaner stock, 03-04 are almost a full point leaner on a pulley. Chris' stock 03 dynoed at 13.0 af on a 4# stock tune.

As for me I am 90% fed up with flaky appointments and am not going out of my way to schedule new work. I have a full time job and commitments most weekends. I am in the process of moving across town for the next three weeks.

I may start taking PayPal deposits on any future work. I have been no-showed stood up for the last time.

Terry would be your best bet, he has forgotten more the we'll ever learn. I put a 6lb on mine and used a Diablo predator tuner made 400hp and 500tq at the wheels. I also have a C&L upper and a single blade throttle body. There is a dyno shop in the Benbrook area called Simple Quick Racing where I had mine done I was able to do any adjustment before anything cratered. I think I paid 100.00 for two trucks on their dyno.

Well I'm headed down to PSI this weekend to drop off my buddys truck to get tuned and some other stuff installed to it (fiberglass rear leafs, metco lowers, QA1s up front, possibly a 2.3 Whipple, and do other maintence items)

Ran a 90 MAF and a 4 lb on the stock 2000 tune.
Dyno charts proved that it was much safer than the chip I had it.

charlie
02-27-2009, 05:14 PM
It was safer because of the fat AFR command @ high loads on the stock tune. And the not so aggressive timing

CWJameson
02-27-2009, 06:30 PM
so it works on 01-04

but the 80mm maf and stock tuning shoudln't peg should it?

yup, the more trucks the cheaper, the only down side would be the amount of time he could spend per truck, the more trucks the less time, I forgot how much Jim charged when he came for a dyno tune day at Wells after Fun Ford Weekend at Ennis

Like I said I will talk to Pat and see if this is even a real possibilty, he said it might be on the phone last week, but things can always change

Cold tune pulls the timing out of the une so that it is safer to run WOT in cold temps, since the cold air makes our trucks run lean
