Since we are moving to Dallas... it gives us the opportunity to revisit our television, phone and internet connections..

I have some cable and DirectTv now and really like DirectTv a lot.. because of my location and living in a smaller city, my HD reception via antenna leaves something to be desired.. however, I am thinking that HD via antenna in Dallas for local channels would be pretty good. Or if anyone has DirectTv.. do they let you have local channels for free via the satellite, even better to me.. I would like to save as much $$ per month as possible..

We are thinking of dropping our landline and just using our cellphones, anyone have a reason not too? We were using Vonage here and really like it, saved us a ton of money too.. great service..

And what are the offerings for high speed internet? are there different levels of speed that you buy? if you guys could give me some hints, it would be appreciated..

It depends on where you live.
Time Warner and Fios are the choices in my area.
A land line is required for home security/fire systems, that is the only reason we keep ours.

David, thanks for answering the question on local channels. I get the national feed on local channels (thats an oxymoron).. anyway if you take the local channels from DirectTv.. you are supposed to get the Local on the 8's from the Weather Channel.. which we like to get.. however, I will give that up and just go the antenna route..

Who do you use for that? That is the only thing keeping me with a home phone line.

Very seldom do I have reception issues with my dish.

If you find a company that will use wireless, then let me know. My home alarm is the only thing that keeps me having a home phone. I did find a local plano company that used a cellular setup, but the reviews of the company were extremely bad.

I don't think Lake Highlands area is in Verizon service area.
I am in Plano and currentl have telephone and DSL internet from Earthlink $50/month plus DirecTV satalite TV. Only problem is the copper telephone line is provided by Verizon. Verizon does not do such a hot job of maintaining the copper line since they are pushing fiber optic line. If you allow FO line to be installed, Verizon has no obligation to maintain the copper line. During recent spat of 4-days of rain, I lost the DSL signal OFF and ON for 36-hours... coupled with Earthlink's "NO-HELP" "non-english language" call center (Verizon says the DSL signal is Earthlinks problem and Earthlink says it is Verizon's problem) a body ends up reconfiguring one's hair by the roots.

Which is why I am in process of switching to Verizon TV-phone-Internet bundle and will save $41/month for 24-months, after which I will be back to comprable priceing that I currently have.

Do'nt know if the above helps you or not.

Keep in mind that when you swicth to FIOS for phone your phone dies a few hours after the power goes out

The old Copper POTS lines would work even if the power didnt - the FIOS phone will die after a few hours of battery backup time

I put an address in one of the neighborhoods that we are looking at,, and no Verizon popped up on whitefence.com. I am leaning towards Verizon for high speed internet, may do away with land lines and just use our Verizon cell phones for calls.. but will have to check out signal strength.. I have really liked DirectTv for television.. however, we had some bad weather recently and HDef was out of commission, but when I switched the same station over to standard def, no prob.. it just screws up my dvr recording..

Verizon is supposed to maintain the copper land line, but in my case, they only come check it during dry weather ... when it is functional. Been having wet weather issues off and on for a year. I guess I'll have to rely on cell phone during power outage.:hammer: This is one of those damned if you do... damned if you do'nt things.
