Hey guys today I was changing out the rear diff oil, I had noticed it had been leaking I thaught it was the gasket. I went and got a new gasket from the parts store and when I was scraping off the old stuff I saw a hairline crack on the diff and that is where the oil had been leaking. Does anyone have an idea how to properly fix this or am I screwed and will have to get another rear end.

It can be fixed. But it had better be a damn good welder and a good machine shop. It might be easier to stuff it full of pookie put it back together and pray till you find a used one. Assuming it's your daily.

Is it the diff or the diff cover that's cracked? If it is just the diff cover, just get a replacement before May 1st.

No its the diff not the cover.

The most common cause of something like that is if you get one wheel spinning then the posi kicks in. That puts a ton of stress on parts and the case. If yours had a slight defect from the factory then it might have just cracked due to stress. Be really careful with it until you get it fixed, or you may damage the gears or posi unit too if the case starts flexing too much. You should be able to get a new rear housing at the wrecking yard for a decent price. There is a guy on ebay parting out an 02 Harley if you want to look him up.

+1 on buying from a trusted member here (BC Lightning) vs Ebay or anywhere else. The Ebay one is probably fine (truck was wrecked in front) but shipping will cost you a lot. The SVT one is a really good deal if you want to do a rebuild first. I just had my carrier bearings replaced and the original gears re-set up and it cost me over a grand including the bearings. Better to get a known good one locally and save shipping and the risk of getting it all in and finding out its bad.

Good luck!
