Anyone ever changed their own head gaskets? I think I'm gonna have to. The L smokes real bad until it gets warm, misses on start up, and runs out of coolant like a mother. So any advice and or knowledge about head gaskets and changing them would be appreciated.

When you do get the heads off, check the block for cracks and send the heads to a machine shop to have them checked

73000 miles on the odometer. I'm 99% sure it's the head gasket, I'm really contemplating trading it in for a newer mustang. It's my DD and I need reliability. This truck's been a lemon.

I hate to get rid of her but I'm kinda being forced into it b/c it's not been reliable and who knows what else is wrong with this truck.

GPZ I can't reply to your PM for some reason so here's what you asked for.
2001 73k on the clock
pulleys, intake exhaust, tune, shift kit, hardend rear gears, throttle body, egr delete,
It smokes real bad until it warms up and goes through coolant pretty bad. On a cold start it misses for about a minute or so.
