I'm looking to buy a gas chainsaw. I just want to do stuff around my property, nothing major. Any recommendations?

Stihl is my pick. I would stick with a 16" bar the 20 needs a commercial engine. I think mine is a MS 290.

having said that I have a 20 or more year old homelite that still sorta runs

Sorta

good enough for a little yard maintenance

but I would still spend a few more bucks and get this

You can get by with one of those little ones if you only use it sparingly.. I have been through about 3 of those over time in my life.. I agree on the 16" bar that Terry posted about.. What you might really want to consider, is just renting one when you need it.. they are usually kept up decently and then you dont have the maintenance and storage issues.. Unless you are going to use it a lot, I would consider the rental option.

Oh, :0fftopic Kim wanted to let you know that she would take your two dogs off your hands too so you can simplify your life... :D

I used the homelite to heat a house up north for 2 years
Went thru 3 log splitters
Since then only used it maybe once a year.
I would get a case for it
They leak oil like crazy
And get some safety equipment

Dad finally wore out his 12 yo. Husqvarna 18" blade chainsaw. It was always well maintained as scheduled. This is with Dad using it fairly hard as they heat using firewood and clearing timber on the 40 acre house place and other family heavily-wooded properties.

Here's their url: http://www.husqvarna.com/us/

Thanks guys, I'm off to Tractor Supply and Home Depot today to check them out. The Stihl Easy 2 Start ones are looking pretty good. Also good suggestion Dana, I'm going to look into renting one since I don't plan on using it very much. :tu:

p.s. sorry Kim, the dogs are staying with me. :)

found online quote to rent a saw

Daily: $52.50

not sure thats a deal unless you only rent it once

If your property wasnt so big you could look at electric but you would need a LONG extension cord

Renting is always interesting.. but even though it might look expensive, you dont have to store it, service it, etc etc.. find out its leaking oil, later on.. you just go get one, use it and return it.. but if you are going to really use one every year, then I would purchase one.. see my other post on a battery powered one..
