One of the things I always missed in the L, was a Homelink garage door opener. When my handheld opener kept falling out of the overhead console (cheap Velcro:() I found that a Homelink module from a 2002-2004 Mercury Mountaineer fits perfectly in the garage door opener bay of the overhead console. The Mountaineer colors do not match the L, so a quick coat of medium Graphite trim paint combined with a minor wiring mod gave me the desired results. Note: Ford discontinued the trim paint a couple of months ago, so if your planning on a mod requiring trim paint, you need to scout around to find a dealer that still has some in stock. I found a can at a dealer 60-mi north of Dallas.

homelink is just a generic door opener that you can program to match your door

You can get a Homelink transmitter from Ford (various options rearview mirror, sunshade, overhead console) that will fit the L but they are a bit pricey ($250 to $400 depending on source). Or you can get a homelink module that has been removed from a used or wrecked vehicle. I got mine from Ebay for $30. There are several how-tos on F150 truck forums. I will be glad to share details of my experience with anyone wishing to pursue the subject. I hijacked the idea for the overhead console from a how to posted on F150 truck forum.

I modified my existing visor to add the HomeLink transmitter and then had it recovered with the OEM fabric. The HomeLink works off of the connector for the lighted mirror.

Best option is to try and locate a gray visor e/w HomeLink from a Navigator or Harley Davidson. You can find them at junkyards and on Ebay. The gray ones are harder to find...more tan color! Do not buy the Lincoln LS...looks the same as ours, but actually a tad smaller.

Here's the link that gives most of the information:

This is where I bought mine:
