when going built what all do you really need to upgrade without spending a fortune? not that its cheap anyways lol. silly question i know but im learning? heads, pistons, rods, etc.......????? i would like to slowly upgrade buying one thing hear and there and slapping it on! thanx guys.....

I would definitely do rods and pistons and other internals first, like said, the rods are the weakest link. Then cams and heads together after that. I would recommend honestly doing it all at the same time though. As not to have to repeat so many steps taking it apart and putting it back together. If you can afford to do it all at once, I'd definitely go that route. :tu:

Save your money first. Then keep your eye on all the truck sites and get used parts for a fraction of the new price.

Then when you have all the parts you need... get the engine built.

For a while shops were selling built short blocks for 3350, that is cheaper than you can buy the parts yourself...

I thought short block kits dont include the short block but rather all the parts and gaskets.. but dont go by me, I dont delve that far into engine rebuilding.

But keep in mind, I'm a cheap S.O.B. I bought everything when it was on sale.

Manley rods, pistons, arp studs, high volume pump, bearings. $1300.00 from JDM.

Machine work. $400.00

All gaskets. $180.00

Timing set (all of it) $245.00

SFI Harmonic ballancer $360.00 <----- Not really needed.

Box of stuff I bought from Steve $50.00

02 intake $Ask Steve, I forgot.

Heads $3,800.00

All the miscellaneous crap, you can add in another $200.00 to $500.00

Now, if you do not know how to properly assemble the engine, I would suggest you by a short block, or have Terry put it together for you.
Because if you goof up, you can double this cost plus, possibly the cost of a block.

as far as machine work what is is involved? lets say i get the rods, pistons, all bearings and what not and use the stock crank.. what would my next step be to put it all together? i mean as far as machine work and also what about getting everything balanced out?

i would also like to go built but i kinda want to build my own short block since iv never really done it before. i have full confidence i could put it together w/o any issues.

to the OP i would get a short block first if i was on a budget and install it myself if i were you to save money, there are plenty of people on the boards that would be willing to help i bet as long as you had beer of course...
