I making a movie for a friends upcoming 40th b-day.

Mostly still images with effects and audio- a glorified PPT.

I'm going to burn to DVD when done and then we are displaying on a 108" projection at the surprise party.

What would be the best quality to save it as?

There are a bunch of options listed and most appear to be PC related.

its tough to say

AVI and MPEG4 are standards

many newer screens and projectors have USB slots

you may be able to just put it on a flash

the movie maker format is windows specific - least likely to play on anything but a recent windows PC

Yep I think your right on Doug. I've saved as AVI thinking this was my best bet, burned to a DVD RW but can't play back in any DVD player except a computer. All the home DVD players can't recognize the format.

I'm going to try starting the project over in my laptop which has Sony's Picture Motion Browser installed. It appears to be more robust than XPMM and I'll see how it goes.

and some players only like dvd -Rs

Its a real crap shoot - never had any luck with DVD RW

trouble with AVI is there are about 6 or more avi codecs

Apparently you need to have DVD 'authorizing' software not just a burner package that will encode to play on home systems.

I was able to finally get it to work (converted the AVI format from XPMM) on a DVD RW using this:

It still won't play in my g1 home Sony DVD player from 95 but plays fine in all my kids newer players. I just can't get rid of the old Sony considering I paid over $500:eek: back in 95 when they first came out.
