View Full Version : How long to change plugs?

I've got a friend @ work with a 98' Expedition (5.4) & amongst other things, he needs plugs. I need to make some X-tra $$$ & so I need to know how much to charge him to do the plugs, as well as how long it should take. I've turned many a wrench before, but I've never done plugs on a modular. I've seen a lot of threads about what a PITA they are, so any tips would be nice too.

You need the 24" extensions and the 1/4 drive 7mm wobble socket. 6" spark plug socket is nice. There is a how to and tool list on the old SVT Lightnings.com site maybe.

Regular 5.4's take a little more time. Make sure the blow off and clean around the coul packs so you don't drop dirt in the holes.
Ford charges 300 for a plug change. I charge 120 for Lightning plug changes.

If access to the Expedition engine is like the Lightning, about 2-hours for your first try, assuming that youve got the right tools.

The key is practice and the tools.
I am sure if you search you will find tips.

Must be a dead cold motor. IMHO.
Start on the back ones first as these are the hardest.

I have the tools and done this many times, and I would charge at least 6 cases.;)

I changed the plugs on our 98 Expedition one time and don't ever want to do it again. When it's time for the L, I'm paying someone else!

Steve, the most important tool to have is a magnet! You will drop crap in places your fingers will not go. Besides, I use the magnet to put in the little bolts back in the coils at the back.

$120.00 for a plug change is well worth it IMHO. If I where not so damn cheep I would pay that just to not have to do it myself!

I taped the screws to the socket with masking tape then pulled to yank it off once the were started - saves LOTS of magnet time

Yah, on my Gen1. Gotta love the old pushrods!!
